Proteus Models makes a really nice 1/72 580. Somehow Proteus is affiliated with Welsh Models. Kit has a vac fuselage, metal landing gear, and the rest is resin. Sold by Welsh Models and Russ at AHS. Very accurate kit, and they also have 1/72 Convair 440 and C-131.

Hi Ken,
Garrett AiResearch made the Maximizer kit including gear doors for a standard DC-3 with PW R1830’s. The Super DC-3(C-117D) which also has gear doors uses the Wright R1820. Due to the slightly different cowlings and different oil cooler contours, I don’t think the doors are identical. But it doesn’t seem there were any after market doors for the model, so I will do the very thing you mentioned—use the doors from the Airmodel C-117 vac kit. Maybe not perfect, but close enough for my work. Thanks for the comments!

Hi Tom,
I looked thru some of my references and did not find any photos or drawings that would be of much help. However, I did find a close up shot of #1 on a CP Air DC-8-40. Shows sone good detail. I found it on a Yahoo search of Rolls Royce Conway engine on DC-8-40. On most pictures it is really hard to tell from the PW JT4. If you are still searching, I hope this helps.Take care,

Thanks for the input Jennings. I think I may have found a close match for the Carribean blue. Testors has a Turquoise enamel that I believe was in the car paint section. However, I have not had a chance to paint a sample to compare with the decals I had intended to use.

Hi Walt–I completed the Airmodel Super 3 model not too long ago. I found the nose section, particularly the cockpit windows totally unusable. I was able to graft an Italeri C-47 nose section onto the Airmodel fuse. It made a major difference. The top of the fuselage on the Airmodel is a little too flat. By grafting on the Italeri section I was able to use it as a guide for correcting the fuselage profile. With a little fine tuning it builds into a nice model.
When sanding the wing halves, be care to match the airfoil thickness of the outboard panels with the center section airfoil. It is easy to oversand the outboard panels causing a mismatch at the attach angles. Don’t ask how I know this!
I learned a lot building that model which I finished as a Navy C-117. I have another Airmodel conversion that I plan to build as a Capitol Airlines Super-3.

I can’t speak for the DC-10-30 kit, but I have built several of the 1/144 Welsh DC-8’s and I really was pleased with the results. Probably a little more work than an injected kit, but the profiles seem to be right on.Good luck,

You seem to have good knowledge of the Marketing Aids line. I have their 1/164 DC-8-63, but my decals are for a -61. Any idea where I might find the Series 63 decal?Thanks,

I don’t know of any coroguard for a 1/100 MD-80, but I do have a 1/100 MD-80 I purchased on EBay a while back. I believe it was sold by a company called Marketing Aids. It is a simple kit-just fuselage halves, wings, engines, and horizontal stabs. No panel lines–very basic, but good profile. I am putting color on it now, and have a set of MDD MD-80 house colors decals meant for this model. The factory airplanes had gray wings with natural metal slats, flaps, and ailerons, so the wings are not a problem.

Hi Tom,
Transport Wings/Aircraft In Miniature at one time produced a 1/72 vacuform DC-8 that could be built as either a Series 30 or 50. I have the kit which I found on EBay sometime ago. I have built their DC-8-63 which turned out to be one of my favorite models. There are no panel lines, but the profile sure appears good to me. If you go to http://www.aim72.co.uk you can see the DC-8-50 and -63 kits they still offer. Good pictures of completed models.
