Hi Juha,
I used these decal on my QF 767’s and used 2 kangaroos on each tail. The white is quite strong but 2 looks the part. They are the old “Spirt of Australia” itallics-well mine were.
If you plan to make a reproduction of the ex BA ,RR engine version the 2 and 5 cockpit window panes are painted white. There is also a few external differences to the GE engined fleet also. I am happy to help get some details or pictures if you have a particular aircraft in mind

October 9, 2005 at 11:00 pm in reply to: Any interest in a new 1/144 707-320 kit by Kurt Lehmann ? #102260:)Hello from sunny Cairns Australia,
Thanks to all those who gave positive feedback about a new 707 kit by Kurt Lehmann. As a result, Kurt hopes to have the first master ready in about 12 to 18 months giving us another choice in Boeing 707 kits. I have asked Kurt if he had any bigger projects planned for the future but the 707 will be the biggest due to the extra time required to make any bigger aircraft. All orders should be made with Kurt directly through his website.
Thanks again
GavinPS- I have also posted pictures of Kurts DC9 and BAC 1-11 in “Kurts Gallery”.

October 1, 2005 at 9:31 am in reply to: Any interest in a new 1/144 707-320 kit by Kurt Lehmann ? #102163Hi Guys,
I still will be churning out the Airfix 727’s and Minicraft 707’s but I will try to have one of each as “The Kit” which I will use Kurt’s kits for ( hopefully a 707). I have just had my first child and I cannnot see myself sitting for hour and hour over pictures and models and cutting and hacking as much for a few years. I am far from wealthly but would like a nearly perfect 707 and 727 and 747-400 for that matter to start with and I will save and pay for it. I have a heap of Minicraft,Revell,Airfix and Welsh vac-form kits to build when our child gets older but for now “straight from the box” will be what I am looking for . I wish that Hasegawa had ventured into 1/144 so that we who model in 1/144 could have such a excellent starting point to making the model look real.
I am not trying to be a critic of Revell, Minicraft or Airfix. They give us all a great choice and with a little or a lot of work can look similar to the real thing. I am just asking if there are any other modellers out there who want a choice to build such a 707. If not -Kurt gets to keep his 707 and I will just have to spend more time with my Minicraft version with aftermarket engines and cockpit.

Sorry if my post offended you or anyone else out there. Nobody on this website makes me tired or annoyed or I would not of joined. If you are tired of me I am sorry but after making more than my fair share of Airfix, Revell and Minicraft kits I do look forward to making “one from the box” so to speak. I do not have the time that I used to have to modify and upgrade with aftermarket products like I used to so I would rather spend the extra $$$ to get a better starting point. Unfortunately Hasegawa only make 1/200 scale kits so we have to rely on people like Kurt and Welsh to make the above average kits in 1/144 scale. If we were making Military models we would have a choice of price and quality. I do not see why we should not support people out there offering us in the Airline Modelling community a choice even if it costs more. I would also rather buy 2 x Airfix 727’s over the Minicraft but not for the price-I think it makes a better starting point to make a more accurate model. Spend the time and it will be close to perfect. Spend a bit more you can make Kurts ‘straight from the box” to look even more accurate with less TIME.
If you are interested in making “one from the box ” please post and if I make you tired -Hit the box on the top right of the screen. We should all embrace a choice even if you do not want to participate in buying it. Otherwise- write to Hasegawa and get them to offer affordable accurate airline models in 1/144

Hi Nick,
How about a Thai Airways set for the DC10/MD11 in 1/144? This is a beautiful livery and the only way it can be done in 1/144 scale is by using Revell 747 Thai decals which are slightly to big on the tail. It would be easy to sell them as the DC10/MD11 as the sizing’s would be the same apart from different window runs and the extra fuselage length on the MD11. Maybe a set of registrations for 1 of each.
I would be the first customer for 2 sets of these. I have a Welsh MD11 on the way and would prefer to build it Thai. It would look great parked next to a Thai DC10
cheers

Hi Everyone,
I hope to finish the following before my 1st baby is born in early August so here goes
All in 1/144 ( I’ll start my 1/100 collection when I have completed my 1/144 collection)-BOAC Super VC10 – 90% Completed-awaiting only for BOAC decals to arrive and final detail
– A300B4 TAA – 60% final sanding and paint preparation almost completed
– LGW F-28-1000 MAA – 50%
– Sasquatch Dash 8-100 – 10% QantaslinkAfter the baby I have some projects I plan to start but will have take a lot of time as these are more difficult than the hacking, cutting, joining conversions that I have been doing so far. The Super VC10 kit gave me a massive confidence boost after finishing my first vac-form fuselage and adding all the wing fences and wing leading edge extensions so I will give these a go.
-QF 747-438ER -Using a Revell model -200 fuselage and wings with the upper deck, main gear, L/E wing root fairing, winglet and extension from Revell -400 as I cannot live with the trailing edge height on the fuselage of the Revell -400 kit.
– CO 757-200 – Using Minicraft kit with Braz nose, aft fuselage, tail and engines.
– QF 717-200 – using information kit.
– QF L-188 Electra – Minicraft kit with Welsh vac-form fuselage.
– TG MD-11 – Using Welsh Vac-form kit with decals from yet to be sourced
-QF 747-200 -1970’s- Revell kitWhen I will get to these and the other 53 kits and decals in the cupboard will depend on my new lifestyle.
Back to my TN A300- Have fun modelling Folks!!!!!

I think the kit is a write off and will go the hard way to make a -400 by converting the much better Revell classic -100/200 kit. The whole wingbox is wrong which causes the problems to the wing angles and pylon and engine height problems. The trailing edge of the wing is far too high where it joins the fuselage. If this was scaled out it would make the trailing edge on the real aircraft about 1 metre higher. If you have a Hasegawa 747 or the Revell Classic kit compare them and it will stand out like a sore thumb. Trying to correct the wing angle then also affects the pylon angle and engine height. I am sure someone out there can probably fix it but the conversion option should cause the least hair-loss. The nose also turns me off but I think that could be fixed.
Cut the Upper deck, fwd wing to fuselage faring, extended wing and winglets off it before you get to it with the blowtorch!!!!

Hi Anthony,
I made a NZ DC10-30 last year (see photo in members gallery under Gavin’s 1/144 models) using Flightpath decals and the Revell DC10. I agree with what Skippiebg says about the kits. The Revell is definately the better kit and with a lot of sanding, putty and a window decal the cockpit scrubbs up ok. Braz make aftermarket engines for the DC10. The Flightpath decals come with only one aircraft for ZK-NZQ and are excellent. I ordered them through Russell at Airline Hobby Supplies in Arizona.
It really is a shame that Hasegawa does not recast most of its 1/200 scale kits in 1/144. I like 1/144 scale because it is less toy like than the smaller scale. It is a pity that Revell, Airfix and Minicraft can’t get to the same standard of accuracy as the smaller Hasegawa kits. Then we could have a great DC-10, L1011 and 747-400 straight from the box-less sanding anyway.
Good luck with your project
Gavin

Ed,
After converting a 767-300 to a 200 and nearly finishing the kit I realised that my model sat at
“rotate”. I was lucky as I was making the model in a Qantas scheme and I had to keep the vertical stabs off in order to apply the white kangaroo decal. I used modelling clay cut into thin strips and fed it into the cavity for the vertical stabs with the help of a toothpick. It was sticky enough to stick to the clay already in the nose. It took some time and 767 looks much better at the gate.

Truly sad news. I have quite a few decals on back order so I guess I will have to go for other colour scheme. I always liked working with the decals and they had a great range. The QF A330 set was excellent as is the QF 747-438ER (to be made after I convert a Revell 747 classic to the 400).
Hopefully someone can take over the Commercial decals like someone has with the military decals

Hi,
I use a combination of Blue Tac (modeling clay) and glass marbles. Seems to do the trick and it stops me losing my marbles!!!!

Hi,
The Revell is definately a better kit than the Airfix one although the Revell kit is far from perfect. Apart from the poor wings ,the tail is far too thick. I had to sand the tail down to almost nothing and fill parts of the tail on the Revell L1011 that I finished last year. I am still not that happy with it but I wanted a Tristar. Maybe “Walsh”s Vac-form L1011-500 is better than both of these.
As they don’t make the Otaki kit anymore we have to wish that Hasagawa do theirs in 1/144 scale.(no chance).
The aircraft really deserves a good kit.

Juha,
Fantastic Work! It is inspiring to see work of this detail and standard. How long does the average kit take you to complete?? I also like your MD11 engine’s from your gallery.

Bas,
What makes all of this even weirder is that the 1/100 scale Doyusha 747 classic’s are not to bad. Doyusha can be a little hit and miss in 1/100 scale too so it would’nt surprise me that there is a difference in accuracy from kit to kit in their 1/144 range.
Maybe they will let you open the box before buying it.If only Hasegawa would come to us in 1/144……………………………..

Hi all,
Like Stef the Revell 747-400 wing to fuselage join is a concern to me. When you compare it to the Revell 747-100 or the Hasegawa 747 (any type) the wing is too high at the trailing edge. On the real 747 the wing is about 3 foot lower at the trailing edge. I am thinking of converting my Revell 747-100 kit into a -400 as it would be easier job to change the upper deck, wing root fairings and extend the wings rather than somehow fix the back of the wings and engine pylons with the Revell 747-400.Most people can live with the wing to fuselage join on the Revell-400 and it is still far ahead of Airfix’s -100/200 version.
I have never heard anything good about the Doyusha kit but if it is the same as the 1/144 United/Flying Tiger’s 747 I bought in the 80’s I would stay away from it. Even the decal sheet colours were very very wrong.
I heard that this was re-jigged to become a 747-400.
