I was curious why United Airlines DC-8-61/71s had a “double” window at the rear of the port side? I have only ever seen the standard 40″ window spacing on DC-8s. After looking at several UAL DC-8 photos on the interweb, I have decided that this was a standard feature for their stretch DC-8s.

June 16, 2025 at 4:47 pm #248482Way back in the day ATP offered a decal sheet with DC-8 windows. I recall most of one side of the sheet, and possibly some of the flip side, was taken up not only with the window differences among the different types and sub-types, but also with differences for aircraft ordered by specific airlines. Douglas was very accommodating to customer requests for specific features (see the larger R1 door on Eastern’s DC-9s, for example). When aircraft built to such bespoke customer specifications were acquired by other carriers through merger or sale, it made fleet integration very interesting, if not maddening.

Thank you, I believe that you are correct. I have several of the ATP 1/143 DC-8 window decals and also see the double window. So I will use those for the United machines.
Thank you everyone for your comments.
