June 13, 2023 at 4:36 pm #243407I’m still confused about UNITED AIRLINES? I asked about it , but I don’t think it was here. When CONTINENTAL merged into UNITED. Airline name was changed to (smaller) UNITED over the CONTINENTAL. but the basic scheme kept the straight line paint division between white and natural metal, with the narrow gold paint separation and a small partial globe having gold trim upon a dark blue painted rudder fin. Some aircraft now are now being revised to have larger UNITED titles replacing smaller ones, others have no changes done.
- The twin jet Airbus And smaller Boeing’s now show up with large airline text and the partial globe fin marking done with white globe & gold grid lines replacing narrow gold grid lines on a new lighter blue fin color. Others still in the old markings and yet others have bits of old and new designs.
- Some Boeing 777 & 787 & 757’s show up with the white as a wave starting below nose going up to wing, over, then down before turning up to end at elevator. The gold paint striping follows paint curvature division, but now runs on the white paint not as an edging as before. the rudder plane is restuyled in the lighter blue with white globe.
- Some 777 & 737’s have begun to have enlarged titles , but others continue to have the straight paint division lines.
- The United Express planes all seem to mimic the revised paint scheme.
- My question is? Is United trying to make over their fleet into a new image or make a separate schemes for domestic vs International aircraft? If this is a general make over why paint large titles on some older schemes and not on others? If UNITED’s older planes lifespan isn’t worth the cost of a new total repaint as they’re going to be replaced soon why are the larger titles being painted at all?
- How do they repaint or remove blue without leaving a difference between new and old white tones around the removed blue text of previous small letters? Old removed blue paint usually leaves a ghost image on a white surface.
- Finally, why does take so long to repaint the fleet into a common design? It didn’t take Delta or American as long to have their fleets in common color scheme.

June 16, 2023 at 7:36 pm #243414The newest UAL livery is the large”United” with the wavy blue line. The gold cheat line, gold incorporated in the globe and smaller “United” is being phased out. All aircraft are going to be painted as they go in for either heavy checks or other long maintenance schedules. All new aircraft delivered will be new livery. As far as removing the blue, the aircraft are literally stripped of all paint, cleaned, primed and then repainted fresh. With a very busy COVID recovery schedule, the airline won’t pull an aircraft off line to paint it. It is said that most fleets should be airborne 15-18 hours a day to maximize revenue. Hope this helps…

Delta and American had more urgency in their most recent repainting because they a large fleet from a merger that needed quick rebranding (Northwest in the case of Delta and US Airways for American). Prior to the Northwest merger, Delta had been relatively slow in their rebranding. Atlanta in the late 90s/early 2000s could be quite the menagerie of colors what with Widgets and Ron Allens and Deltaflots and Song and Delta Express..

June 17, 2023 at 7:49 pm #243417The newest UAL livery is relatively new and the CAL globe and colors were simply “stop gap” until the finalization of the merger. COVID slowed the painting down and from an economic standpoint, it doesn’t make sense to paint an airplane which may be leaving the fleet sooner than later. Remember at one point, you could see a variety of legacy UAL colors at ORD…The “Tulip,” the battleship gray and the last blue and white livery which existed before the merger
