Hello once again to all who love this mysterious airplane… 🙂
So, OK. Here we go:
Not long before the 37-300 flew, there was in 1979 a 07 that took off with its embryonic CFM-56 turbofans. It was mostly a testbed, but also a PoC (that’s Proof of Concept) design to show it could–in theory at least–work.
For the USAF it was a no-brainer. The civil world, not so much, as the 07 lacked enough ground clearance to avoid a tailstrike on rotation/approach to make a stretch feasible.
Enter the DC-8.
From the 60 series was born the 70 series, both of which were my chariots more times than not. Although the 60 was my first flight at the tender age of 5 weeks from PHNL to KSFO…
Tangents. Crud. On:
While the 07 missed the target with the new engines (perhaps arguably not, as Merlin mentioned the E-3 & Ken has talked about the E-6/8 frames) the big winner was really the *37*, which as we all now know is probably forever a frame that will be pushed by CFMs.
Still, that first 07 needs some attention, so here’s the thread. Take it wherever it may go folks 🙂
