At PAAQ we clocked in at 78kts (that’s 89.7294 USA statute miles) per hour in peak gusts. Here at my home it reached 108sm. Wow. Imagine the weight of air. Then think of how seawater is 820 times more dense. Fresh, moreso. Gut punch. It took the roof from a Wal-Mart, and more.
Weight of the world, and all that.
I found a Cessna 152 on top of a hangar. I’ve seen more doped linen and steel in tatters in a river than I ever want to.
Alaska is no different than any other feast-or-famine desert anywhere: Bask in its beauty, but never ignore its indefference to you, silly human. You don’t own the sky. *I* do.
Says Kyiv, my blue & gold Macaw.
The storm is still ongoing, the USA Department of Commerce says ending tomorrow…In the meantime, think of this:
A Douglas DC-3A, once a C-53 in the USAF that has logged more hours than any service member–is still on her feet as N763A, from 1943 to 2025, here ready to fly.
For those who voyage, may the wind forever guide you. For the rest, know that it isn’t about fighting the waves, but riding them.
Stay safe @LH707, and all my colleagues around the world, active or not.
Until the next dawn, and beyond.

In the grand scheme of things this is a pittance, though in the heat of the moment it seems far worse. Our birds still fly; one has built a nest next to myself and of all creatures a cat…We’re warm, safe, and that C152 is now *in* the hangar, since the roof it passed through was folded…But (isn’t there always a *But…* in English?) at least its inside. PANC NOAA is now saying 6am for the wind to stop but as always I’ll forever trust the Weather Rock & fly accordingly.
Regardless. Fly with your head *and* your heart, and know Alaska chose me, as much as I chose her.
NB @LH707, KSEA in January. Be watching your inbox, & flights into KBFI.
