Dear Boys and Girls, I can’t breathe; I’ve just found out that an original large scale model of the second preliminary Airbus A-300 design from early 1968 still exists and is on display at the Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington!
This was the fattest of the preliminary designs with a 6.54 metre (21 feet 5¾ inch) diameter fuselage and was intended to be powered by the Rolls-Royce RB-207 engine……

6.54m wide fuselage!? That’s wider that the 747 of the time isn’t it? Crikey!

AKL NZYes George, the previous A-300 design from Autumn 1967 had the same diameter/cross-section as the Boeing 747. This first A-300 design effectively combined the fuselage of the Sud Aviation-Dassault Galion design with the wings/tail-unit of the Hawker-Bréguet-Nord HBN-100 design.
