The mention of the Revell Electra’s 1/115 scale got me thinking and I figured the topic is worthy of its own thread.
Listing some oddball scale kits. I’m no expert so don’t be surprised if any errors creep in.
Revell Electra 1/115 scale
Monogram DC3/C-47 1/90 scale
Revell DC-7 1/122 scale
Hawk Vickers Viscount 1/96 scale
Monogram Super Constellation 1/134 scale
Revell Super Constellation 1/128 scale
Revell DC-9 1/120 scale
Revell Convair 990 1/135 scale
I believe that the Revell C-130/L100 and 707/KC135 kits are just a little bit off from 1/144 scale as well. The Minicraft C-130/L100 has different dimensions then the Revell so some decals don’t fit.
My first experience with a box scale airliner model was the Hawk/Glencoe Convair 880 at 1/126 scale.
Interestingly enough Heller has a big fleet of 1/125 scale airliners. Airbus A320, DC-9, 727, 747, Concorde, and A380.
So…..
Regarding scales some kits seem like orphans, some are pretty close to others, and if you pick 1/125’ish scale kits one could make quite a few different airliner types.

March 14, 2025 at 9:11 am #247683My one experience of oddball scales was 4 years ago, just after picking up this hobby, when I bought the Revell Super Connie from eBay.
I believe the scale wasn’t mentioned on the box and it was someone on here (maybe yourself?) that pointed out to me that it was 128 scale, just in time for me to order the correct decals for my TWA build (the originals were fossilized).
The kit was molded in 1956 and the oldest kit I’ve built so far.
So many kits, so little time …

DutchMarch 14, 2025 at 1:05 pm #247685Beautiful model of a beautiful plane. Revell also muddied things by releasing a 1/144.scale Constellation.. Careful which kit and decals you get for a Revell Connie. In my original post I forgot to mention the Hawk/Testors Convair 240/C-131. Also 1/126 scale so it will fit in with the Hawk Convair 880 kit and Heller airliners.

Talking about Heller 1/125 I can add:
A300B2, DC-8, B707, B737-200, L-1011 (which is rereleased in 2025!)
DC-8 has the possibility to bring gear up and down, including the doors.

March 19, 2025 at 5:50 pm #247710There weren’t any odd ball scale kits back in the fifties, only kits that you knew you could afford to buy. That a Mustang kit was the same size as a 707 or in scale size to each other didn’t matter, it looked real compared to wood kits that needed wing profiling, wood putty, maybe a stand, and hopefully landing gear included. An odd scale was there then. The wood kits looked good when finished, but who in those days had that much time.
