Dear Airliner Experts
There may already be a thread on this, if so please direct me, but what paint(s) would you advise for the underside blue of a BA aircraft of 1970s-1980s? I will soon be starting work on a Viscount from AA and wish to do a BA aircraft of 1976. My palette is either Tamiya or Gunze paints and would prefer to stick with them. I’m a bit nervous of getting the shade wrong being more used to modelling military aircraft.
Thanks for any advice
Andrew

British Airways Negus & Negus livery 1973- 1984
Humbrol 15 Midnight blue over an undercoat of Oxford blue 104.
British Airways Landor livery 1984-1997
Same as above with a drop of red paint and several of black to give a darker rich blue.
Pearl Grey upper fuselage – use Revell 34371 Hellgrau
British Airways world livery and Union flag (Chatham dockyard) 1997 to present day
Xtracolour X322 BA world Scheme Blue from Hannants over dk blue undercoat.
Matching paint colour to decal to avoid any mismatch highly recommended. Both Negus and Landor blues were prone to fading and weathering, best to find a photo of the original to refer to. If you are unable to find Humbrol paints you should be able to find a conversion chart on line.

Hi Andrew,
If you’re looking at Tamiya paints I have always used a 4 to 1 mix of X3 Royal Blue and X16 Purple for the 70s-80s Negus livery. To my eye it’s spot on.
Cheers,
Ian

Thank you Highlander and Ian
I have come to the right place!
Where do the names Negus and Landor come from, they sound a bit random?
Regards

On the BA World Blue, someone said Xtra Colour was not in production which would be a total bummer. Does anyone know if that is the case? Also the crazy restriction of not allowing paints to be mailed from UK to US is also still in place. This paint is absolutely accurate.
Does anyone have intel on this?

Hi Andrew,
Negus and Negus and Landor Associates were the brand consultants who designed the corporate identity.
Newell & Sorrell came up with the BA World Tails liveries.
Cheers,

There is not a full restriction or ban on shipping Xtracolor paints to the US from the UK. There are specific rules prevents them from shipping by the typical airmail routes. If the order is large enough to ship by sea, then it is possible. With that said, there is a source for Xtracolor paints in the US. I have been ordering my Xtracolor paints from Kitlinx located in Salt Lake City. Here’s a link to their stock of Xtracolor paints: https://www.kitlinx.co. Look up Xtracolor under their link for Manufacturer on the left hand side. They do have many, but not all, airline specific paints. I recall that they get their restocks of Xtracolor paints by placing large orders and getting them shipped by sea.
Have fun modeling!

Mike! This is the best news I have had in a long time! Seriously. I am sure I am not the only one who appreciates this great news of a US Xtracolor resource.
Cheers!

When I visited the Kitlinx shop (MRS Hobby Shop) in Salt Lake City last March, they had a fairly wide selection of both enamel and acrylic XtraColours paints. As Mike pointed out, they don’t always have every color. The guy at the register told me they have Hannants include various colors in each shipment they get, so they don’t always know what they will have. The book section was impressive – they had nearly every Squadron In Action that has ever been published, in addition to nearly every genre of book or magazine you could think of. Kit selection was generally just a limited amount of the most current stuff. The majority of the kits on the Kitlinx website are not in stock, but would be ordered from a source once you ordered it on the website. Just look closely to verify “In Stock” vs. “Available” – the same would hold true for paints.
