As part of my post Hurricane Helene cleanup, I am going through the last of my kit storage boxes that were damp but not apparently damaged. Well, I was wrong. I already filed my insurance claim with the boxes that were completely ruined. This past weekend I went through two large storage boxes with several of my 1/144 airliners and bombers / transports. While the plastic parts are okay, I had to trash almost everything else included boxes, decals, masks, instructions and PE that is corroding.
I usually store all of the extra bits and AM decals with my kits, though not always, especially if the box is still shrink wrapped. I discovered a few things during this exercise. Ziploc bags are not waterproof, i.e. they do not keep out water. However, they are very good at keeping in water. The corollary is that sealed kit bags also are very good at keeping in water. After cleaning and drying the plastic parts and placing them all in new, large Ziploc bags (I know, I know.) and placing them in a clear storage tote bucket, I am now considering my options for building these kits as originally planned or to replace the decals and build as another option.
I have a few questions.
I had two ATP #AD5036 Transamerica 747/DC-8-73/L-100-30 decal sheets, planning to do both a 747-200 and a L-100-30. Both sheets were completely ruined. Is there another brand AM decal sheet available for either 747 or L-100 in Transamerica markings, or is ATP the only game in town? (I already have the 26decals DC-8-73 sheet.) I can pick up some ATP decals from Joy decals or eBay if necessary.
If I decide to not go the Transamerica route, what are some viable options for the 747-200 with RR engines? I think I can come up with a different option for the Herk.

If it weren’t so inconvenient would we not use “TUPPER wARE” plastic containers instead of the nice, cheap little bag. Most of us have been in the same position as you. If a plastic kit were a paper kit soiled in the water, we at least get over the feeling, of seeing a buildable plastic kit with no decoration to add on when finished.

I’m nitpicking but didn’t the Transamerica 747’s have GE engines?

Yes, you are correct. Fuzzy brain syndrome strikes again. I am using the Revell E-4A kit, but substituting Bra Z GE engines.

Speaking of Transamerica one of my favorite books is Crisscrossing the Globe by Cynthia Swenson McAlister. She was a Transamerica flight attendant. Being a flight attendant is a pretty crazy job. Being a flight attendant for a charter airline is even crazier.

Discovering Clint Groves and his ATP/Airliners America catalog in the late '70s made me realize I wasn't the only hobbyist with an interest in building airliner models. Beginning with Aurora kits and now enjoying the latest offerings from Revell Germany and Zvezda in 1/144 scale, it's been a fun ride.
