Hi all,
I’m trying to put together a list of the original operators of the Lockheed L-1011. By that I mean airlines that ordered directly from Lockheed, and not second-hand operators. All lists I have seen include every operator whether original, leased, second-hand, etc. etc. which is not what I want. Here’s what I have so far:
1. Eastern
2. Delta
3. TWA
4. Pan Am
5. PSA
6. Hawaiian
7. Air Canada
8. BWIA
9. Faucett Peru
10. British Airways
11. Courtline
12. TAP Air Portugal
13. LTU
14. Gulf Air
15. Saudia
16. Alia Royal Jordanian
17. Air Lanka
18. Cathay Pacific
19. ANAThere must be more, 19 is a really small number. Who am I missing?
Thanks,
ahmed
KSFOJune 7, 2021 at 4:52 am #161166I found these 2 sites:
https://www.airfleets.net/listing/l10-1.htm
https://flytristar.tripod.com/page/prodlist.html
From cross-checking both lists:
– Lockheed retained the 1st airframe
– MSN 1211 & 1212 ordered by British Airways but actually first operated by British Airtours
– Last (MSN 1250) airframe was ordered by Algerian Govt as 7T-VRAThat covers all 250 that were made. (MSN 1001-1250)
Cheers!

YSCB/CBRJune 7, 2021 at 6:38 am #161167Both great resources. Cathay Pacific, Hawaiian, and Fawcett Peru acquired their frames second hand.
Been building airliner models since the '70s. Clint Groves and his ATP/Airliners America catalog made be realize I wasn't the only one with this interest. Pleased that the hobby has progressed from generally inaccurate models and decals to extreme detail and precision.
June 7, 2021 at 8:57 am #161168Thanks Bill. So, I guess it’s worse than I thought. I thought Cathay was an original customer and then bought a few used ones from Eastern. Here’s a photo of one inside the factory:

KSFOJune 7, 2021 at 12:21 pm #161170Dear Ahmed,
there were only 19 delivery customers for the L-1011.Two in your list are wrong: Faucett and Hawaiian, they bought second hand frames.
Two are missing: British Airtours, Algerian Gvmt
Of course Cathay was a delivery customer.Reading out the production list yields these operators in chronological sequence:
01 Eastern
02 TWA
03 Air Canada
04 Court
05 LTU
06 Delta
07 ANA
08 PSA
09 British
10 British Airtours
11 Saudia
12 Cathay
13 Gulf Air
14 Pan Am
15 BWIA
16 Alia Royal Jordanian
17 Air Lanka
18 TAP
19 Algerian GvmtCheers,
Christian

www.christianklepp.comJune 7, 2021 at 1:01 pm #161171Don’t forget; there were airlines that ordered the TriStar (early on in the programme) but did not take delivery or were taken over/absorbed into other airlines. Did Lockheed use customer-codes?

Or maybe it’s MAYBELLINE...............June 7, 2021 at 3:13 pm #161172Terry,
no customer codes were used for the TriStar,
just -1, -100, -200, -500 for the versions
and construction numbers ranged from 1001 to 1250Cheers,

www.christianklepp.comJune 7, 2021 at 9:40 pm #161173Thanks everyone!. We now have an accurate list. Wouldn’t British Airways and British Airtours be lumped up as one customer?
Re. Hawaiian, I could’ve sworn I saw a picture of one inside the factory, but I guess not. My mind is playing games on me.
Thanks,
ahmed
KSFOJune 7, 2021 at 11:30 pm #161174Regarding customer codes, TriStar serial numbers had a prefix consisting of the number “193” followed by a letter that designated the customer. For example, Eastern’s TriStars had a 193A prefix, those built for Delta* had a 193C prefix, and so forth. The production list on the FlyTriStar site, linked upthread, will let you see this. For airframes that changed hands, the full serial with prefix will let you figure out who originally ordered the aircraft.
* = that admonition is because Delta acquired several secondhand TriStars, including some Eastern airplanes and some of the Air Canada -500s.

I completely lost track about it and the moment I read your comment it came back to my memory!
Awesome!Ahmed, could you try to find that potential image of the Hawaiian TriStar during production?
It may well be that some planes received paint that got never delivered that way.The ones Hawaiian obtained second hand were
N762BE to N766BE and EI-BTNCheers,

KSFOJune 26, 2021 at 3:09 am #161248I miss flying the TriStar. Nothing ever matched that buzz saw noise on takeoff. I suppose my last flight on one must have been summer 1995, when due to really whacky winds, they routed us from Gatwick to Atlanta by way of NORTH of Greenland. We made landfall in the US at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan heading due south. Longest transatlantic flight EV-er!! Wish I’d realized at the time it would be my last 1011 flight. On that same trip I took my last 737-200 flight on Transavia from AMS to LGW. The guy must have been an ex-RNLAF F-104 pilot, the way he yanked that little Boeing around the sky
