Hi Everyone,
After a long delay, the Kit and Decal Database beta is ready for testing. You can access it at https://airlinercafe.com/models/ “Models” is much shorter than “Kit and Decal Database” and fits better in the URL structure. The Models section contains everything: kits, decals, built models, sprues, resin items, photoetched parts, etc. etc. Everything that was in the previous database of the old site.
Every single one of the 28,916 items from the old site has been ported over and categorized and tagged as needed in the new format. What we’re still looking at porting over are the comments for each item and the user-created photo albums containing the items. Unfortunately, the way they were stored in the old database is making it very difficult to import and assign to the correct user and item.
At the top of the Models section, you will notice two tabs for searching: Search and Advanced Search. The default basic search field is quite powerful in itself. You can combine terms, for ex. American DC-10 will search every field and if it contains the words “American” OR “DC-10”, it will return results containing any of those terms. If you wrap your search terms in quotes, then it will search exactly that phrase. Notice how united 727 and “united 727” return different number of items. You can further customize the results from the Advanced Search tab.
On the Advanced search tab, the first three fields, Aircraft, Airline, and Manufacturer, are auto-complete fields. Simply start typing, and after you have entered the second character you will see a list of entries to choose from. Since these fields contain thousands of entries, a dropdown list would’ve been very long and take much longer to select from. Only a few of the fields are now in dropdown format.
As the title says, this is a beta release and is not the final product, there are still a few things to finish:
- The upload form so you can submit new items.
- The screening process with approval and rejection emails.
- Small improvements in the layout, including different ways to display the search results.
- Performance improvements to speed up pagination and search results.
