Hi there,
Most of you know my DC-8 project is entering the end game. Nothing has gone wrong, per se, but time has come to build up the landing gear.
The landing gear struts themselves look great. The wheels on the other hand are a disappointment.
The wheel/hub detail is pretty lame. I looked at the wheels in the Minicraft kit and they are just as lame, but in different ways of lameness.
However, i have a Minicraft KC-135 kit, and the main wheels gook actually pretty good.
Did the KC-135 and DC-8 share the same/ or same size wheels, tyres and brakes? The Minicraft wheels actually fit onto the X-Scale axles better than the X-Scale wheels do, but they are slightly larger.
Thoughts??
Thanks,
david

The below link from Goodyear will provide you with tire sizes of general, commercial and military aircraft. It’s not everything you’re looking for, but it’s a start.

September 25, 2025 at 8:15 am #249437Hi Romy,
I took a look at the chart you sent me. It took a little bit of time to scroll down and find the data i was looking for, but it did answer my question.
DC-8 Tyres were slightly smaller than Boeing Tyres. 44 inches versus 46 inches.
Rated up to 225 MPH. Wow!
Thanks for sending me this!

While 2 inches does seem like a neglibible difference, it’s enough that you can see the difference when looking at profile photos.
My guess would be the slightly smaller tyre diameter, was an accommodation for the swiveling rear wheels on the bogies in order to provide adequate clearance and/or access when the plane was making tight turns.
So, unless something better comes along, we’re sticking with the kit wheels, despite my misgivings about them…

September 28, 2025 at 6:56 pm #249476I think the 707 tires were 46 inches, and the 720 was 44. Did the KC-135 have the same tires as the 707 or the 720? In either case, it’s possible that the kit makers just got the scale size way wrong.

September 29, 2025 at 8:55 am #249481Hello Folks,
I do have the DC-8 wheel “almost” dome. They will be available in both 1/72 and 1/144 scale.
I “just” need the time to finish then together with all the rest of the DC-8 bits…..

Cheers,
Ivo

I am building up a set of KC-135 wheels and will test fit them on the X-Scale Struts. I also glued up 4 of the x-scale wheels, but they still need cleanup.

September 29, 2025 at 8:16 pm #249486I have no meaningful add here, but happy to see Ivo, doing something great again.
However a quote to remember is “it’s like building an oreo cookie to very close tolerances….”
Love it!
I don’t always say “Proceed as requested”
But when I do, it is because I have no clue what you just said. -
