Hi everyone,
Does anyone recognize the airport this picture was taken at?
It is obviously under construction (I assume a gate pier); probably in the 1970’s or very early 1980’s.
I ruled out most of the BI stations that I am familiar with….and I’m drawing a blank (possibly rebuild of IAH?).
Let me know if you recognize the airport this building construction is at.
Appreciate any help.
Thanks!

April 19, 2025 at 8:21 pm #248043Do not know. But the trees so prominent and close to the building to me with heavy concrete terminal says IAH, MSY or TPA?

April 19, 2025 at 10:05 pm #248044Hi Dulles Flyer,
I think you might be right with the MSY suggestion. Looking at Google Earth photos from 1985, they show an addition to the east side of the main terminal that — from ground level — looks a lot like what the construction would look like after it was completed. I would post a picture to show what I mean….but this site is not real easy to post pictures on. The only thing lacking was a grove of trees in the background…but there is a park across runway 2 that runs on the other side of that construction.
MSY would explain why I didn’t recognize the terminal….the last time I was through MSY was 1977 on a National 727-35 connecting to a BI 727-227. That National landing was one of the wildest “arrivals” I have ever had.
If anyone has other suggestions….please chime in.
Thanks Dulles Flyer!

April 20, 2025 at 12:11 pm #248049I grew up in New Orleans, and when I saw this photo, New Orleans was my first thought. At the time this photo was taken there was an observation deck that would have provided this view. Also, at this time the park/playground mentioned above was probably not there yet, so the trees in the background are totally logical.

April 20, 2025 at 11:23 pm #248055Here’s a photo of a National DC-10 taken from the observation deck I mentioned above. This is the early 70s, and construction of the east side expansion was just beginning, as the pile driver in the background is visible. Prior to the east side expansion, which is the construction seen in the Braniff 727 photo, there was an Eastern hanger and a large parking lot in the area beyond the ramp.

April 21, 2025 at 4:31 pm #248061cool photo!…even if it has yellowed with age.
On a sad note, I believe that photo is looking toward the trees where Pan Am 759 went down in 1982. Very sad.
Thanks for the photo…..and the info on MSY gjake.

April 21, 2025 at 6:02 pm #248062Looking at the open field in the far left of the photo, it is the clearway off the end of rwy 10. Pan American 759’s left wing clipped the trees beyond that and cartwheeled into the neighborhood beyond. At the time, I was living two blocks south of, and on one of the streets in the middle of the crash site. Sad indeed.
