I have the new Vintage Flyers decals and will be starting an AA 707-123B Astrojet.
I can’t find any good images showing colors for the gear legs, wheel rims or wheel
well interiors. I am thinking the gear legs were an aluminum lacquer color? Thanks—John

February 8, 2020 at 8:37 am #157825Hi Jon, AW31940K, I am sorry I tried inserting photos or thumbnails and it did not work. However, the AA 707 family is my favorite airliner and upon reviewing many photos the hubs are gray, probably Boeing gray and the struts appear to be gray also. Overtime these become dirty from brake dust and other elements from flying around and landing and they become very dirty. When I was building the Revell 707’s decades ago when I was younger I assumed these were a natural metal but over time through better observation I saw that they were gray. As for the wheel well interiors I always painted them a dark color unless the model had some detail in them. What color scheme will you be making, the orange nose, the circle logo, or the red, white and blue stripes?
I hope this helps and I am sure someone may be able to include a photo with more information.

February 8, 2020 at 5:04 pm #157829Hi John….I would agree with AAMD11; the B707s that flew at American had Boeing gray gear struts and hubs, until they became covered in brake dust, dirt, and stains…then they just looked dark and dingy, almost black in some cases. I’ve found some good photos of the old AA 707s with good angles showing the gear, though not up close, on Pinterest. Clearly the gear are gray, and so are the wheels. You might take a look at Jon Proctor’s website, jonproctor.net…go to the right drop down “Photography,” then choose “LAX Through the Years,” and scroll down. There are a lot of great vintage photos, including American Astrojets, a few capturing the landing gear clearly enough to make a judgement for color. I have not perused Airliners.net specifically for the AA 707, but I’ll bet there are good references there, too. Looking forward to seeing your model. Can’t speak highly enough of the Vintage Flyer decals…accurate in every way.
