Converting the Hasegawa Orion with Contrails or building the Welsh one?

The simple answer: How do you feel about scratchbuilding? (No, neither asked in jest nor rhetorical…)
I’ve now converted 7 Hasegawa Orions into Electras since 1999. The last several used parts I started mastering after IIRC build #2, because it’s a lot of work.
Things to consider: The Orion is beautiful in a great many ways, but has some shape issues (fuselage not circular where it should be, aft wing roots are way wrong). None of this is unfixable, but the Contrails set won’t give you any help. You’ll need other sets/handmade parts.
…And as an owner of a Contrails set, I can sum up the quality in one word: Rough. You’ll be wrestling a lot with it. Effectively it’s a starting point for a conversion, not really a conversion itself.
The Welsh kit is typical of the more recent Welsh offerings–detail is soft, with near omnipresent warpage of flat resin parts (wings); having personally been in, on, and around the Beast from Burbank, and drowned in documentation from all over, I can’t shake the feeling that the nose is off as is the tailcone.
So what’s a modeler to do? Well…
Were I asked to build #8, I’d go with the Hase plastic & a whole bunch of parts. IMO, I’d suggest the following:
The CMK P-3 detail set. You’ll use about half of it, but the parts you use are vital.
The Eduard PE sets (excepting the weapons bay, of course), with mods. The interior is good for about 50% of the flightdeck (which will need mods to the plastic), unless you want to go with decal windows in which case just ge the external set.
That leaves the shaping of the radome, forward glazing, & tailcone, plus the cutting of correct Aeroproducts 606 props unless you’re doing a KLM machine. If you drop me a note I can help with that. I also have all my old Reeve photos scanned, which you’re welcome to have.
Quite the screed knocked out on an iPhone, but it’s sunny & warm here in Seattle, I’m basking in airplane noise and the occasional Jet-A scent, so I’m in one of my happy places…At least until my next flight starts boarding

Feel free to PM me & I’ll be in touch…

October 19, 2018 at 3:39 am #154845I’m lobbying Paul Fisher to do one. Imagine the quality of his Connie bits applied to an Electra conversion? The mind boggles…

You talking about the YC-121F? If so, that long pre-dates the Electra/P-3, and it had T-34 engines…

Yeah, my bad…Should know better than to make too many posts at once from the Alaska lounge…

Although, didn’t Allison snag a Convair for the 501D tests? IIRC it was labeled “Operation Hourglass” or somesuch

October 21, 2018 at 3:04 am #154855There was a Super Connie with Allison 501s testing for the Electra program. If I could figure out how to add an attachment I would post a photo. It was a R7V-2,nicknamed Elation.

January 21, 2019 at 4:51 pm #155375I used the Contrails parts. It’s surgery but without them, I would have never tackled the project. Be aware that if you install their interior, some internal grinding away is necessary. So profit everything! For prop blades I used metal ones from a Welsh but had to thin them down as they are way too big. Wing nacelles never looked right to me, so I corrected them. Search photos and you’ll find my build. I have a step by step photo album on my Facebook that is public that would be helpful for you. My name is Tom Kalina.

January 11, 2025 at 5:17 am #24713310 days ago, I received his 1/48 Kawasaki C-1 kit but I believe all observations applie to the Electra kits.
The main parts are 3D FDM printed, some sort of polymer in wire form, heated and deposited in order to print the shape. Don’t expect perfect surface finish as the layers (I’d say 0.2mm) are clearly visible and feld under the nail. It demands either complete sanding or light puttying and sanding.
The detail parts are HD 3D resin printed and of very nice quality.
The whole package is very interesting, at least to my eyes. It asks for more work but the shapes are generally VERY accurate, at least on my C-1 kit.
I think the 3D FDM printing method is a cheaper way to have these exotic kits (exotic by the scales at which you can order them). I think the 1/72 Electra is priced around USD150 shipping included (if you wanted it in the usual HD 3D printed resin, think CRM quality, it could easily cost around USD250).
My 1/48 C-1 came in at USD200 + VAT and I think it was a good deal. I’ll order the 1/32 kit in a few weeks.
Just be prepared at the fact he doesn’t deal with certain… nationalities, it’s his business after all.

Cheers,
StefanJanuary 11, 2025 at 6:39 am #247136Guys-thanks for the inputs, but it still don’t answer my question
I already have couple of Toshihiko models, I asked if anybody tried to build
or tried to compare the 3 options of building the Electra
The first 2 are buildable, but are so so in terms of complete set/accuracy
Does the 3d version correct the flaws of the Contrails/Welsh?

January 12, 2025 at 3:58 pm #247159I had no issues with mine I built a 72nd scale for a commision build and a 48th scale that is now in the American Airlines museum. Both fit well together. Did spend alot of time sanding. Only issue I have is that he makes stickers for the windows which are very poor. I used clear resin and that took a bit to get it without air bubbles. The kits now come with the flaps seperate so you can have them up or down. I hope he will redo the cockpit in a different 3d because of the print lines it is hard to sand and not loose detail. I think they are the best on the market for the 3 scales.
