Hi everyone,
Getting ready to paint my Roden Super VC10 in the 1968-1970 vintage paint scheme (i.e., not the Meat Axe) and i’m wondering which grey would be more suitable. Some people are Using Mr Color H315 but other folks have said the shade was closer to Boeing Gray. I do have some Mr Color USAF Light Gray (oddly enough, no FS reference) and it too looks to be in the ballpark.
Also, i’ll be painting the blue cheatline and splicing in 26 Decals segments where i need them. Any thoughts on the shade of dark blue? An off the shelf lacquer would be preferable.
Thanks in advance,
david

Greetings!
I really can’t advise you on specific paints, but if you get it close, it will be hard for just about anyone to say it isn’t correct as it can look different in varying lighting. I think the hardest part is getting the gold foil BOAC lettering and the tail Speedbird to look stunningly beautiful as it did on the real airplane. That was an amazing scheme to see whether in the sun or under dark, brooding skies. I have never yet seen a model that replicated it, but if you do manage to do it, just expect the oohs and aahs to come your way!
Best of luck as the BOAC Super VC10 is one of my all time favorite beautiful airliner schemes. I saw them up close in Jamaica and Panama.
Best regards,
Jeff Jarvis

UPDATE:
I figured out a paint formula for Speedbird Blue, and my VC10 has made it all the way through the painting phase, now in the decaling phase. Waiting on some paint in order to clean up the nacelles a bit as well as some damage repair for the belly….
More Pics to follow, once my airliner window decals come in.
Thanks for shopping!

I might have missed this in earlier posts but what mixture did you use for the grey? In photos I have seen warm greys and cool greys. All seems to depend on how the photos were developed, sunlight etc.
thanks!

Calgary, AB, CanadaFrank it depends a lot on the lighting in the photo. I looked at a lot of colour pictures and early on i had it narrowed down to something like Boeing Grey or a Light Gull Grey colour. The majority of people over on Britmodeller who built VC10s went with Light Gull Grey so i chose that. Mr Color H315.
The Speedbird Blue can vary a lot too, depending on the lighting.

If you don’t have a program on your computer that will allow you to export images at smaller sizes, there are many, free online tools you can use. Just Google it. Here’s one from Adobe: https://express.adobe.com/tools/image-resize

KSFOAhmed, is it possible to insert pictures from Flickr via link, to get around the file size issues? i do it with Britmodeller all the time.

I’m still working through some issues rectifying file sizes for upload, but here are a couple of random progress pictures….
Here’s an underside shot of the engine nacelles, depicting the oil breather vents i drilled out and what i think are sabre drains for fuel venting. There’s a lot of vents and holes on the VC10 nacelles that Roden ignored, but in my view they add a lot of busyness and visual interest to the model.
The vent masts were made from Contrails aerofoil shaped strip stock that was cut at an angle using “The Chopper”, slightly over length, glued in place and then filed down to final length. Not seen here, but i faked the “holes” with carefully applied gloss black.
Another valuable data point worth sharing: The Montex cockpit window masks worked very well.
The most tedious part was installing the tiny masks for the “eyebrow” windows, but in the end they worked great.
I wanted to install some windshield wipers, but the ones i got from Authentic Airliners decals were not really the right size, so i may have to build some from scratch.
I also found that Tamiya Nato Black makes for a good, slightly weathered flat black and it makes a nice contrast to the Speedbird blue.
Stay tuned for more updates, if and when i can rectify my image scaling issues.

What’s your “Dairy Queen” method?

Step I: go to Dairy Queen.
Step II: in an artists mixing palette (the ones with the rounded depressions) add a couple drops of Tamiya Nato Black and a couple drops of Mr Leveling Thinner.
Step III: holding the model with both hands, hold the model perfectly vertical and slowly poke the nose of the model into the paint, and carefully remove.
Step IV: carefully wick away excess paint with a corner of a paper towel and set model aside to dry.
The size of the “boot” is a function of the depth of the paint in the concave pallet depression.

I’m against it because eventually those photos get deleted and they disappear from the forum post. We have lots of posts like that.
This should answer all your questions. Everyone needs to read the tutorials. Please! A few minutes invested can go a long way.
Thanks,

KSFOI read through the tutorial post. 2 MB is just too limiting a file size, even if i use the thumbnail function.

2MB is actually a huge amount. It has to be 2MB before you can upload it and then insert the thumbnail. Most photos are a few hundred kilobytes, not megabytes. Unless you’re looking at them straight out of your phone or camera. Imagine this thread having 10 photos that were 2MB each. How long would it take to load?
Your computer should have the option to save or export them in smaller sizes. What’s the file size of your photos?
Thanks,
ahmed
KSFOWell, that’s the thing. I just looked at my VC10 photos and as they presently stand, they start from 1.7 mb and go up from there. I use an Apple iPhone 6S to take my photos, and aside from cropping down the image size, i have not yet needed to worry about re-saving them as smaller files.
Historically, i uploaded my pics onto my flicker page and inserted the photos using the share function. I share the hypertext link when i post to Britmodeller, and i use the BBCode when i post to ACAM.
So, having to resize photos is a thing for me because this is the first time it’s ever posed a problem.

@convair990a we have increased the max upload size to 5MB. We will process the photos on the backend to make the file sizes smaller. Usually you can get a very good quality photo at around 1600px wide at being around 500-600kb. On the old site, the max upload limit was 1MB. 🙂
Please give it a try. Thanks!

KSFOAhmed, i will give it a try….
Ah, that’s lovely. Much Better.
Thanks!

I’ve spent most of June either preparing to interview for jobs, interviewing for jobs, or recovering from interviewing for jobs.
As a consequence, i’ve felt burned out and my model building mojo is only now starting to come back….. slowly.
Here’s the latest on the VC10. My last painting operation was to add the dual loop ADF antennae on the upper fuselage (visible as discrete, dual black rectangles).
Now, the fairings themselves WERE depicted in the kit; however, since they straddle the fuselage joint, there’s really no practical way to preserve them through the sanding process, so they had to go.
If Authentic Airliners Decals ever chose to make a 3D printed set for the VC-10, they could include these fairings (yes, they are slightly raised), as well as a set of suitable windshield wipers and vortex generators.
Here’s the underside. I’m plodding thru a list of elements i want to add to the underside. There may or may not be some more selective hole drilling as well as masking and painting of flush mounted antennae. There are a number of panel lines on the wings (mainly behind the slats) and some on the fuselage i’ve added with a very sharp #2 pencil.
So that’s the latest. As always, keep those letters and cards coming.
