I wanted to share the building process of my recent projects with you,
hoping that you enjoy seeing airliners slowly developing from their
primer immature stage into beauties.
If that, however, might be too detailed or boring, just let me know and I an skip over it
showing the results only.So this is going to document the build of the Authentic Airliners MD-11 / GE version,
in Lufthansa Cargo colors using Draw Decals and AA windows.What happened so far is that she received her third primer coat.
Now she is prepared to await her final white paint job.

Good work so far! Which ship number are you doing? I think most of the LHC birds had the later intake and pointy exhaust spike, which configuration are you planning to build?

ChristianAwesome. I think the first batch (D-ALCA-L?) were late new builds with the new intake, and M-O were bought secondhand, but I’m not sure where the split is. If you go for one of the later ship numbers (earlier builds), they will have the old intake shape and the new spike, so you should be ok. See here is D-ALCO with the old intake:
As far as the exhaust spike, good that Kurt’s got you covered. I built a Hasegawa KLM MD-11 and kitbashed it with some scrap sprue, wasn’t too hard. I’ll have to dig up pictures of it.

The progress on my modelling activities can’t get any slower anymore.
I wish I could allocate more time to this amazing hobby!
At least the MD-11 received her final white fuselage paint and Lufthansa gray belly in the meantime.

D-ALCS
The decals are from Draw Decals (titles) and Authentic Airliners Decals (windows).
The upper wings are finalized!
The fuselage is work in progress so please do not focus on any details there, its still very raw.
I am doing the last touch ups on the lower wing surfaces and will add a picture once ready.Obviously the winglets are still missing as well, but they are about ready to be attached.
Details and weathering of the wings is done according to original photos.
If you right click on the image and select “view image” and further click on the + you see her in 1280 px resolution! Many more details seen then )

The paints and weathering are quite convincing. Might I ask what paint you are using for the Coroguard inter-spar areas and what weathering products you are employing?

The coroguard mix is self-made, I wasn’t convinced about the existing Xtraclor mix (too bright and champagne-like).
I discussed that with Merlin (LH707) when we met and consequently went for my own mix.
I started with Humbrol 56 (steel), darkened it and added a bit of high-shine silver for the sparkling metal effect.
Coroguard is a damn thing as every light angle changes its appearance.For the slats I used 11 different shades of silver and in-between the slats some polished steel.
For weathering I use the full set of the “girlfriends make-up” ))
Eyeliners, kajal (whatever that is in English) and styling pencils of all sorts of colors.
In fact they are amazing because they are very soft and come in every color including coal black, metal, rust, white, brown and grey.
Easy to apply, easy to swipe and what you don’t like you remove using a rubber.
I found it useful to apply a single “crumb” of it to the place where the dirt should originate from and swipe in the airflow direction.The way I discovered that technique was pretty straightforward and caused some great fun when I got asked in the morning “Where did my eyeliners disappear again …” ))
Btw, its also fun to buy them because the girls are always amazed about my interest in these fascinating products. Not sure though they would be still amazed if they would find out what I do with it … ))

www.christianklepp.comThere is no “correct” color for Corroguard. It can be a whole rainbow of different shades, sheens, etc. Whatever looks good to your eye is correct. The same panel on the same airplane will look completely different on the same day, depending on if it’s in shadow or direct sun, wet or dry, etc.

www.christianklepp.comThanks for the information. I have been using Testors CreateFX for my washes and grey paint for my inspars but I think your wings really look fantastic. I think I will experiment with some of your ideas. My wife will be wondering where all of her makeup went:-)

Very good job on the wings, can’t wait to see this one finished.
By the way, since you mentioned the makeup, that reminded me of how Tamiya presented their weathering products, even their brush look like a makeup thing. Sometimes we modelers spent some money on products that we may have at hand in home, as it was in the old school

Its actually my first built Authentic Airliner kit and it was pure joy at all times.
The Lufthansa Cargo titles are from Draw Decals.
Windows and cockpit are from Authentic Airliners Decals.
The “Kranich” crane decals are custom-made by Authentic Airliners Decals.
Some details are from 26decals.
The 3D panels are hand-made. Authentic Airliners Decals offers them now as well.
The anti-collision light is from CMK – Czech Master Kits.

I love building the AA kits as well. Everything goes together so well you can really spend your time on things that are the most fun like weathering, etc.

I just wish I had bought the AA kit instead of wasting my money on an Eastern Express/Mikro Mir one which is increasingly likely to end up in the bin.

I have not purchased the EE kit so I’ve not seen it in person… But its not exactly ($50+ on ebay in most cases) a bargain and everything I hear there are major fit issues. I’ve got your MD-11 and and nothing is even going to come close! If I have to buy another one for you to keep them going I will!

I will probably incur the wrath of somebody by saying it but the Eastern Express/Mikro Mir MD-11 is a heap of crap, not just any old crap but very, very expensive crap. I’ve been building models for well over 50 years and airliners exclusively for about 20 years, I don’t think I’m stupid (I have a Ph.D and I used to teach law at University level if that’s any guide) but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to attach the wings and that’s only one of the problems I’ve had with the kit. I know other people have made good models out of it but doing so is beyond my skill, knowledge or patience. I have always had a very jaundiced view of anything connected with Eastern Express (which I have expressed several times on this site) but the kit looked so good in the box I thought I’d give them another chance. I should have known better and I will never make the same mistake again.
Kurt, I’m not immediately in the market for an MD-11 because I have one of your DC-10s to build first but I would urge you to keep the MD-11 in your catalogue. As and when I do buy one it will probably be the PW version to build in Swissair colours.

WOW!!! Christian, this is a BEEEEEAUTIFUL completion of a fine old lady. Very very very good job! Congratulations! I am wanting to begin and eventually complete an MD-11 in Delta Air Lines livery. I have been on the fence back and forth trying to decide if I’ll pursue a purchase of an AA kit from Kurt, or the EE one that has gotten so may mixed reviews. I suppose if you are drawing attention in the form of compliments from Kurt at AA, and he is expressing a consideration of discontinuing the MD-11, my decision is made…I’ll go for the AA one! Maybe we should ALL bombard Kurt with PMs regarding his MD-11…so he’ll continue the line!

That is gorgeous!!!!! Congrats! I hope my Prat MD-11 comes out as nice, if I can ever find the time to build her. I love the weathering. Far too many airline models look too clean, when these planes are often scruffy and well used; you really captured that look superbly!
Kurt, I hope you’ll re-release the GE-powered MD-11. I was lucky enough to get the Pratt version when it was released, but just missed out on the GE one, and that’s the one I want in order to build an American Airlines bird. I will definitely buy one, for sure. I’d also love to see the DC-10 come back into production, as there are several of those I’d love to build. Just my two cents worth.

Watch out for the DC10, should be on stock again soon. Also, I ordered GE engines for the MD11 kits from the holding company. They should be available during March.

Beautifully completed model for sure. Dave, I feel your pain having purchased three of the Eastern Express/Mikro Mir MD-11 kits from ray at 26decals.com. My intention is to model FedEx, KLM, and the oh so rare combi version in Alitalia colors. I have begun construction on the FedEx version and I have not tossed it in garbage bin, yet. The fuselage is joined and I’m currently working on sanding/puttying away the seams. I’ll try to post a photo once the model is completed. My time line is to have it done for a March IPMS show. The question remains..will it be show worthy? I know it will take all my skills for that to happen. Definitely a challenging kit.
Been building airliner models since the '70s. Clint Groves and his ATP/Airliners America catalog made be realize I wasn't the only one with this interest. Pleased that the hobby has progressed from generally inaccurate models and decals to extreme detail and precision.
