I just want to give a word off warning about one of the Brasil decal sheets. On sheet BD144-17 with Virgin, Austrian and LanChile/express, I found that on the Virgin model, the tail decals are opposite of what they are supposed to be. The virgin text, decal nr.22 are going on the right side and not the left as shown.
The same with decal nr.1, goes on the left side, and not the right side as shown. Not that this is a major problem, but its nice to know. I think they make fairly good decals, although abit thick. They have a habbit of silvering, but that is easy to fix by applying a coat of clear, before applying the decal.

October 29, 2003 at 10:05 pm #97358Hi,
I assume that the sheet you refer to is a fairly early one. Thickness was a characteristic of these sheets, as was the odd inaccuracy. I’ve used a recent issue of Brasil Decals, namely the one containing the LOT/White Eagle/Air Polonia and Fischer 737s, and the decals were beautifully thin with no obvious glitches. The only problem I had was the slight translucence of the light colours which means paying attention to the background colour. I think the general warning about the decals is a valid one however, and it is always worth having good references for your subject matter.
Regards,
Arthur

August 25, 2004 at 9:28 pm #98154I don’t know which of these sheets is early or late, only that whenever I’ve used the originals I’ve had problems with curvature conformity, folding over, translucence and so forth. I don’t recommend the brand, really — the thing is, they do some schemes nobody else does.
On the rare occasions that I’ve used Brasil Decals since my initial collision with them, I’ve merely scanned them and reprinted them with a laser printer on decal paper from Russ Brown which is very good, and used those reprinted decals (after light clearcoating) with excellent results. And of course, if one slivers, I still have the original.

August 26, 2004 at 1:41 am #98160I have had four major disasters with Brasil decals and I am really very very reluctant to use them again. They either simply did not conform to the shape of the fuselage or they were translucent or they badly silvered. It’s heartbreaking to fall at the last fence. Yet it is a shame as they do offer some very interesting schemes well away from the run of the mill.
As a result I have a few unused Brasil decal sheets which I won’t be using. I’ll put some details on the site and post them off to anyone that’s interested.
regards
Hugh

September 23, 2004 at 9:23 pm #98319Hello,
I am about to spend ?100+ ordering Brazil Decals from Hannants. Most of them are recent releases but BEFORE spending such amount, I wanted to have your comments on their latest decal sheets.
Are they thinner than initial sheets ? Do they easily conform to curves or a gal of Micro Sol/Set is needed to make them conform ? Colour accuracy and translucence ?
Is it worth ?
Thank you for your comments, Brend

Personally, I wouldn’t spend it without at least seeing the sheets and being sure that at least the artwork is correct. It often isn’t. Plus, there’s ample testimony here and elsewhere of the other tactile problems with Brazil products — bad conformity, too thick or thin, slivering, poor printing, rapid yellowing, you name it.
As I’ve stated here and elsewhere, if I see a Brazil sheet that is more or less accurate, I scan it and laser print it on better decal paper, which I then clear coat and use as I would any good laser printed decals. If you can do that, you might consider the investment. Otherwise, I’d forego the purchase and choose other subjects until some other decal maker produces the ones you like.

Have you seen this thread?

I’d have to say that I wouldn’t usually spend ?100 on Brasil decals without seeing the sheets first.
Let me have a list of what you’re looking for and I’ll see:
1. if I’ve got them
2. if they’re any good (in which case, I might sell them – I wouldn’t sell the ones I know to be flawed).Roy

CYYZSeptember 24, 2004 at 7:23 am #98328Has anyone used the Brasil sheet for 737s of Air Ukraine, CSA Czech Airlines, Malev and TAROM? If so, how is it? I would very much like to build the subjects included but have put off doing so (for two years since I purchased the sheet) because the carrier film appears to be very thick. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

September 24, 2004 at 5:15 pm #98333Andrew,
No, I am searching for a few Revell 1/144 Helvetic Fokker F-100 for a “collegue”.
We had them, here in Switzerland, about a month ago but I was only able to get one, they seem to be pretty rare…
Thanks anyway, Brend

I have several times used a Hewlett Packard 4650, which is a top of the line professional networked laser printer that belongs to a friend of mine who owns a printing and copying business, so obviously I don’t expect anyone to run out and blow four or five thousand dollars on one just to print the occasional decal.
On the other hand, I’ve also used a much smaller machine at the copy shop at my university (another Hewlett Packard, I think a model 3500) which I believe costs around $700. Frankly, I didn’t notice much of a difference in the quality of the printed sheets.
I usually take the Brasil decals over to my friend’s place because he has scanners with plates large enough to scan the whole huge sheet they produce. I “back up” my other ALPS or laser printed decals on the one at the university because I can scan those right here at home and if I need to print a copy — ie, if I screw up an application, stain or wet an original, or if the decal gets damaged after application and needs therapy, I can take the CD containing the scans, and the decal paper, to work on my lunch hour and make the copies.

Last I checked this decal was no longer listed at Hannants. It was `sold out’ prior to that. I am hoping F-DCAL will do these schemes.

Brend,
I do have these three sheets but intend using them. The Alitalia sheet I have is from the original print run. I believe that this one has recently been reissued with the new thinner clearcoat.
I’d still recommend seing the sheets before buying them, if you can (unless Hannants offer a refund if not satisfied).
I have now sourced some F100s. Thanks for you help on this.Roy
