There was a pretty good turnout for airliners this year. Some are participating in the contest, while others are for display only.

Thanks for the update Dan! Glad to see the wide variety of transports on display once again.
Someday I’ll make it back, hopefully with a couple more seminars in tow…Meantime, enjoy the show & hoping your big Il’yushin turns a good few heads!!!

Man, when I found out you were there, Dan, I got really sad about having to miss this year’s Nationals. I really would have loved to be there with you. I hope you had a great time – and I really hope we get to meet soon.

I’d call what I’ve seen a GREAT turnout. Any info on the America West 737 particularly the decals? ATP had a -200 sheet but the length and tail would be different for a -300.

My first US Nats. What a great show all round. Fundekals broke the bank. Thanks Jonathon what a fun give me all your dough time. Stellar work J!!
I met many great modellers an people. And…. what a great place to hang out for 4 days.
Huge turnout of models also. Apparently our canuk model counter ended up with a tally at 5105 individual models.(math teacher retired so I suspect its close to accurate.)

These were delightful to see this weekend in Chattanooga. My first time at an even THIS huge. I think I had three favorites…the Zvezda Korean Air 747-8, the Heller Eastern Air Lines Connie, and the Minicraft Pan American DC-4, which I think was on the junior table. Very good to see airliners represented well, though I wish there could have been more. I was especially happy to see the junior display table for young modelers. Wow. There are some REAL skills in the making seen there. A large disappointment (for me) was the favor being shown by Fine Scale Modeler. Yep…I’m calling them out. Saw quite a few “we’d like to photograph your model” on all sorts of military stuff, but NONE on the airliner table. Come on, FSM…you’re a reputable publication that we all benefit from…spend some time with the airliners. Our models are no less “difficult” or challenging or pleasing than any others.
A great show…a great time. Thank you for sharing these pics.

Just got back home! What a great event…too bad that you couldn’t make it out there. It would have been great to hang out and talk models! Maybe next year…are you guys planning to go to San Marcos? I am going to do my best to be there, likely with a PSA 727 model.
Challenger350pilot: I would have to say that the Heller Connie was one of my favorites too. BTW, the SAS Caravelle did get an FSM photo request, so at least one:-)

Dan thanks for the info on the America West 737. I’d assumed it was a 1/144 scale kit but looking at the model/registration form its pretty apparent the model is 1/72. This year was a “golden year” for airliner shows in the US. Airliners International had a great turn out and then the IPMS Nationals. Don’t believe anyone if they say shows/contests are on the way out. I don’t deny that any of us aren’t getting any younger but don’t give up hope on shows/contests just yet.

Your model counter colleague is pretty good! I am the contest coordinator for the Chattanooga show last week and while we do not have our official numbers yet, we also estimated based on registrations that there was about 5,000 models in that room. Glad you liked the show!Challenger350pilot:

As soon as you take the model to their photo booth, they take the card so could theoretically be on the table for minutes before it is gone.

I didn’t get any photos of the Korean 747-800. Are there any out there? I think it placed 2nd or third.

Thanks, Dan. It looks like it was a great show and it makes me more anguished that something got sprung on me at work that required me to stay behind. I haven’t ruled out San Marcos, so it may happen yet!
Regarding FSM, even though it’s three-year-old data, they did request to photograph my Delta DC-9-50 (from the Authentic Airliners kit) at the 2016 Nationals. I don’t think it ran in the print magazine, but it did make it into an online gallery, which was pretty cool. Aaron Skinner of FSM, who usually does a lot of the on-site photography, is a friend to our part of the hobby and has written a very nice (and useful) book that’s a guide to modeling airliners.

Sorry guys! Here is a photo of the Korean 747-8 which turned out really nice! I second Jodie’s opinion on Aaron Skinner’s airliner modeling book. Great stuff!
