Hello,
I am building an airliner paint data base by airline. The first
draft is below. Please take a moment to look at it and see if there is anything you would like to add. If there is a good match using Gunze or Vallejo etc. send me an E-mail and I will incorporate the change(s) and post the updated version. Paint values susch as RGB or hex ref are also valuable/desirable. If this project is redundant to something already out there, let me know please.Regards,

August 25, 2021 at 1:02 am #161569Hi Mark
A noble effort….
First, a nitpick correction: “QANTAS” does not have a “u”. It is an abbreviation for “Queensland and Northern Territories Air Service”.
For Air Canada…. not sure what “Teal Green” is? The scheme following the red/burgundy stripe scheme was an all white airplane with a very, very , very dark green fin (think a quart of black with a drop of hunter green added), with a stylized red maple leaf. This is X320, and was, according to materials I had from Air Canada, called “midnight green”. It sure as heck isn’t teal green! The reference to “soft mint” is probably a mistaken reference to “ice blue”.
Under America West…. the references for the tan and turquoise colours are correct. The line for “Mica” does not apply to America West.
For Northwest…. the overall grey with red tail cs. see Xtracolor X369 over X367 grey base.
For Virgin Atlantic… see Xtracolor X367 with Mica X368 overcoat.
For the Lufthansa Blue and yellow…. Humbrol has a colour in their lineup for the Blue (HUM198) and Yellow (HUM197). I am not sure if they are still available. Also in the Humbrol enamels lineup is HUM015, Midnight Blue. It is very good for the British Airways ‘Negus’ scheme.
By Daco Skyline, there are enamels for Sabena and the Western Pacific 737-300 logojets. Most were also released by Xtracolor, as you have noted. You’ve missed SABENA (I’m not shouting…. SABENA is an abbreviation for “Societé Anonyme Belge d’Exploitation de la Navigation Aérienne”).
Finally, be very, very careful with any Pantone or similar colour numbers supplied by the airlines. When I produced my Air 2000 and Canada 3000 decals, Canada 3000 gave me pantone colour references for the orange/red and gold. I should have checked…. these were the colour references for their printed materials, and were not the colours actually painted on the aircraft. I had the opportunity to check, as C3 allowed me to trace the cockpit and cabin windows on one of their A320s that became my window decal sheet.
And for goodness sake, don’t rely on photos, either printed or on your computer screen. Variations in lighting conditions, variations in film and print processes, variations in the screen on your PC can and will alter the colours you are looking at. Best way to get accurate colour samples is to get hold of some of that stripped paper used when an aircraft is repainted – that’s what I gave to Dave Hannant to properly match his Air Canada green.
You provide a link in the pdf to SprueBrothers as a source for Xtracolor paints in the US. A quick check shows only 3 colours listed and in stock, and non are airliner related. The link for kitlinx shows 17 airliner paints as “in stock” (unfortunately the one I want is not. rats!).
Good luck and Thanks!

August 25, 2021 at 2:30 am #161571Mark, thanks for doing this! A couple tips and additions:
1. Tip: add the rough timelines and nicknames of common liveries so that we can know which color match should go with which one
2. Addition: For the Lufthansa no-cheatline fried egg (1989-2017), the Revell colors for the blue and gray are 350 and 374, respectively.

August 25, 2021 at 3:37 am #161573Hi Russell,
Thanks for the input. I’ll incorporate the changes. This is going to take years to finish but I’ll keep plugging away at it. The “Mint Green” under Air Canada is in ref to the 1/144 BPK CRJ-200 kit I just got. It has mint green wings, top and bottom as well as black engines, horizontal stabs and lower fuselage. I can’t find anything similar on airliners.net Nice paint scheme though. Nice kit too!

August 25, 2021 at 8:02 am #161574I suspect the BPK kit has the AC ‘ice blue’ scheme wrong. Engines were the same colour as the rest of the airplane, and (I think, can someone confirm?) the wings and stabs on the CRJs were white with bare metal leading edges. I’ve looked at airliner.net
https://www.airliners.net/search?aircraftBasicType=3035&airline=4435
and it’s really hard to tell. The flap track fairings look ice blue, so I could be wrong. There are a few ex Air Canada Express CRJ200s retired at Marana, I’ll try to get a look at them next time I am down there (when the temps cool off a bit!).
None of the photos show black engine cowls though…..
Thanks!

August 25, 2021 at 9:08 am #161575Didn’t Air Canada change that scheme (the toothpaste) from a greener color to a more bluish one sometime after introduction?
Mark, one further comment I’d make on this one: I think Ahmed is planning to have a wiki editor on the new site when it launches. If there’s an editable table option, would you want to have other members add content in a crowd-sourced manner, or do you prefer to curate and manage the list yourself? Just thinking, if you do want to make it editable, my $.02 would be t store the data in an easily copyable format.

I like the initiative !
May I overlooked something but I should like the different brands, acryl or enamel, FS-numbers.
I realise that’s a lot of work but the quality of your list will be much higher !Auke Bruins

August 25, 2021 at 2:52 pm #161579Hi Folks,
Right now, .pdf is the only format I could upload. The original is a .doc file. I don’t mind having other members adding to the data base. While I like precision, a close match will do for a lot of these paint schemes. Paint fades and changes color the more it is exposed to the element , de-icing fluid etc.

August 26, 2021 at 1:22 am #161581The Ice Blue as supplied by Hannants’ Xtracolor range is correct for the bulk of that scheme. There was a darker shade
applied to several aircraft at one point. But that may have been a glitch at the paint shop, or a test. Maybe someone
from AC maintenance could address this.LH707 :

JH – toothpaste comes in many colours…. so not very helpful.
The “Ice Blue” is (was) the “official” Air Canada name for the pale blue scheme. It was originally a “mica” finish, but that proved expensive to maintain, so AC experiments with a darker non-mica shade, then went back to the lighter shade, sans mica. One after market paint manufacturer refers to the pale blue as “soft mint”, but this was his description, not AC’s name for the pale blue.

August 26, 2021 at 10:07 pm #161586August 27, 2021 at 1:17 pm #161590Thanks for the effort…..
You still have the extraneous “Mica” reference under America West….. and the falsely named “mint green” under Air Canada.
For Federal Express….
The earlier purple when the whole top of the 727s, Falcon 20s and DC-10s were purple, use X303. When they changed the livery to the current scheme, with FedEx titles, use X349.You still have some confusion around Xtracolor 367, 368 and 369. According to Hannants, at the time they were released, 367 is a grey base, to be used for Virgin Atlantic and Northwest. Overcoat with 368 (Mica 1) for Virgin, 369 (Mica 2) for Northwest. 368 and 369 were not intended to be used together.
Thanks!

August 27, 2021 at 3:18 pm #161592Midway Airlines yellow tail colors – Testors Gloss Yellow 1114 (in the little square bottle) and Model Master Insignia Blue. These were almost perfect matches on factory fresh jets, but the blue seems a little dark on a model. The Fokkers and A320s were closer to Insignia Yellow and Tamiya X4 Blue, probably due to fading.
Piedmont Airlines – Model Car World 2048 Piedmont Blue, any Gloss white
Midwest (Midwest Express) – Humbrol 14 French Blue, Mr Color 338 Light Gray
Southwest’s Canyon Blue livery – Xtracolour X364 Canyon Blue or Tamiya TS-24 Purple, X361 Qantas Red, and X324 Easyjet Orange. Does anyone have good alternatives for red and orange for those of us without access to Xtracolour?

Given how hard the Canyon Blue fades, I’m sure there are several lighter blues that could be a match for that. Fresh, it was definitely my favorite C/S of theirs.

The paint code was also the same as Ford WT8026 Fleet truck blue from 1971.

August 30, 2021 at 6:02 pm #161608Just to add to the Piedmont colors discussion, the Boeing colors specified at the factory were BAC 5908 for the blue and BAC 1326 for the red titles.
Pan Am Blue was BAC 561
Knowing the Boeing colors won’t necessarily help match a hobby paint, but figured I would add to the trivia…

August 31, 2021 at 8:05 am #161610Hi Mark,
This is a great idea and will be a very useful resource, so thank you for creating this.
The “Aer Lingus Green (new scheme)” Xtracolor X311 is not so new anymore. In 2019 Aer Lingus introduced a fresh new livery with a teal colour on the tail and engines. No paint exists to match it at the moment but I did put in a request to the guys at Creativecolor, so fingers crossed on that one. The Pantone reference for the teal is PMS3155C (RGB 0 98 113 HEX 006271 CMYK 100 0 25 47).
Also, AKAN Paints produce the following civil airline colours:
78100 Green Lemon for S7 Airlines (Siberia Airlines)
78101 Green for S7 Airlines (Siberia Airlines)
78102 Blue for Aeroflot
78103 Bright Aluminium for Aeroflot
78104 Bright Gray for Aeroflot
78107 Yellow for Lufthansa
78108 Blue for Lufthansa
78109 Ultramarine Blue for LufthansaCheers!

for coming up with the Lufthansa colors of AKAN which I wasn’t aware of!I just ordered them from https://hobbycolours.com and am curious if they got the color right,
at least they look great on their page.Seems that 78108 reflects the new colors (not sure if its the updated color though)
and that 78109 is the blue cheatline / black nose style livery color.
Getting that color right finally would be awesome.https://hobbycolours.com/search?type=product&q=Lufthansa

September 1, 2021 at 5:36 pm #161614Hi Mark,
in case you’re not aware of this, there’s a useful paint conversion chart at the following location which gives FS and RGB references for hundreds of colors.
https://www.paint4models.com/Paint%20Conversion%20Chart%202010-2021.pdf
It could be used to cross-reference Xtracolor paints with equivalents which may be useful for those who can’t source Xtracolor paints due to import restrictions.
It might also be useful to add a column to your sheet for FS numbers where they’re available.
Apologies if I’m giving you more work however as this could end up being a vocation as opposed to a 1-off exercise!
Out of interest, although you’re publishing it in PDF form, is your source doc an Excel spreadsheet?
Tom.

September 2, 2021 at 10:29 pm #161617Hello Tom,
I was unaware of the paint cross reference you provided. It looks comprehensive. The original file is a Word doc. I have dabbled with Excell, but I am not that because that is proficient in it. I post a .pdf because that is one of the few non-photo formats the site accepts. If anyone wants the doc version, shoot me an E-mail and I’ll send them a copy of the latest version.h@

September 8, 2021 at 3:10 pm #161657I just received the AKAN Lufthansa colors and tested them right away.
They are awesome to work with.
78109 blue is for the blue cheatline / black nose style livery and the color looks spot on!
The color is identical to the blue of the 26decals screen printed Lufthansa decals.78108 blue is for the Constellation and old 707 style colors.
It appears to match the United new livery very well.Cheers,
Christian

Only American Airlines responded and that was to say that that office did not handle questions about aircraft livery and they weren’t interested in forwarding my E-mail to anyone who might. This dismal state of affairs seems to affect customer service in most of corporate America these days regardless of the service they are providing.

Some airlines have territorial branding teams, so that might be a part of it. I generally agree, lots of companies have a “dunno, not my department, get !@#$%^&*ed” attitude…

March 3, 2022 at 2:40 pm #162738Mark,
I’m not sure if this adds anything but, in my search for specific colors that are difficult to find, I discovered a Polish company called Hataka Hobby, which I don’t remember seeing referred to on the Cafe.
The website is https://www.hataka-hobby.com.
They have a range called Red Line Acrylics and I ordered 2 of their paints – FS16515 Voodoo Grey and International Orange (which I couldn’t find in the U.K.).
The downside is that they only have distributors in Europe and Australia at the moment so shipping costs elsewhere might make their products prohibitive.
They might provide an alternative source to people outside the US however and are also available via eBay sellers.
So many kits, so little time …
March 3, 2022 at 3:44 pm #162739Sprue Brothers in the US carries the Hataka Orange Line lacquer paints, but not their Red Line acrylics. I have some but haven’t tried them, yet. I’ve read good things about them on other forums, though. They’ve been compared to Mr Color.
