Truly outstanding American MD-80! Ahmed, that looks like too much fun for sure.
Bill
Discovering Clint Groves and his ATP/Airliners America catalog in the late '70s made me realize I wasn't the only hobbyist with an interest in building airliner models. Beginning with Aurora kits and now enjoying the latest offerings from Revell Germany and Zvezda in 1/144 scale, it's been a fun ride.
April 12, 2020 at 1:01 pm #158257Awesome MD-80, Paul! Congratulations.

Superb models from everyone out there! I’ve not started another model so far, finished an A350-900 from Revell a few days ago with the Air Caraïbes livery from Draw Decals. Don’t know which new one to begin with now… too many in my stock! :grinhttps://airlinercafe.com/photo_26951.details

April 12, 2020 at 8:47 pm #158263I haven’t joined the group build because all my current models are at the decal stage.
However in the hope it’s some help to anyone building the EE DC-10 or any other model which requires the nose leg to be fitted early on here is what I did with a Revell A350 a year or so ago. The idea isn’t mine, it was pinched from somebody on Britmodeller but I can’t remember who. Obviously it won’t protect against dropping the model on the floor but it kept the leg on my A350 safe from routine knocks throughout the build.

Sure, bring on the seaplane! We are happy to have you!
Thanks Dave,
Nice idea with the nose gear on the A350. I may give that a go next time!
Cheers and Happy Easter,

Nice work on your 732! If I might ask, what paint are you using for the Corrogard? It looks very convincing!

CYYZApril 14, 2020 at 2:49 am #158290Not to take away from anyone dealing with real issues but…..All I see are beautiful models and happy posts in this thread. Am I the only one having “issues” with building now? Which half-built model to work on? Which one will be fun to finish and has a good chance to be completed for Airliners in July? Minicraft Southwest Arizona One? Oh…it’s developed one of those magic reappearing fuselage seams. The real plane also had winglets when it was retired so do I find and rob a Skyline kit for the winglets or just cave and build it early in it’s career without the winglets. More primer on an Airfix 737-200. Whoops just busted off a flap track fairing. At least I didn’t lose it. All good but definitely not all smooth sailing here.

April 14, 2020 at 4:59 am #158293No worries Ken. As detailed in another post I have a 767 underway that’s a hot mess to put it lightly. Have one major league save to pull off to make it look acceptable. I also have what will be a Finnair MD11 Underway that’s also a major league PITA. Eastern Express kit so that may explain things somewhat. Hang in there. I’m sure your 737 will turn out great. I still have to figure out how to post pics so as to give you all a good laugh. As for Airliners. When and where is it? I have never been to one of these meets

I mixed that coroguard from Mr.Color colors: No.C159 – Super Silver, No.C311 – Gray FS36622, No.C92 – Semi-gloss Black and No.C315 – Gray FS16440. I’ve been doing this for about three attempts, so I’m not able to tell what the ratio is. The base is Mr.Color Super Silver and I tried to gray it accordingly..

It’s very easy with pictures from database – you need to insert your photo ID [photoid=] between = and ] like this [photoid=xyz]. Your linked photo above is photo ID 26951. And then it looks like this:
[photoid=26951]This is a link: https://airlinercafe.com/forums.php?m=posts&p=21216#21216 where is clearly described procedure with photo upload.

Definitely not the only one! My KLM 744 has had a few issues, and now the Revell 748 is posing channlenges getting the wing bend angle correct. Might require some more research on that….

April 15, 2020 at 12:10 am #158313Hi Ken,
I have had models that seemed intent upon fighting me the whole way. The HpH Tu-154 that I did a couple years ago was like that. The fiberglass fuselage had tiny pinholes in the resin. So, I filled them in and when I went to sand it, more would appear. I must have gone through about ten cycles before I finally got it.
I also have the “Shelf of Shame” with half-built models that I will some day complete. Confession time: here are the contents of my shelf…
1/24 Airfix Mossie
1/32 Trumpy MiG-3
1/48 Special Hobby Viggen
1/72 A-Model Tu-134
1/72 Welsh BAe-146
1/144 AA CV-990All of them are very nice kits (although the Tu-134 is a challenge) but I just started other projects with the intent to come back to them. Maybe we should also do a “Shelf of Shame” group build, too:-)
Cheers,
Dan

April 15, 2020 at 12:54 am #158315The “Shelf of Shame” group build is great idea.
I also have a few half-way pieces. My biggest shame is the DC-3 1/72 Piedmont. Next waiting is Revell Concorde, but at least from time to time I will make some progress.

www.zbynek-honzik.czApril 15, 2020 at 2:20 am #158317The Shelf of shame. That is funny. I have a whole stack of them in the garage. They become test platforms for trying to get a color correct.
So far I have not screwed up my Authentic Airliners A300-600 in American Livery but give me some time. I also started an Eastern Express DC-9 kit. So far it has been the normal EE experience. I broke off the nose gear as I feared I would. I hate kits that you have to put it in with fuselage assembly. You always suffer a casualty when you try to sand out the seems. And an EE kit is a fairly robust exercise in sanding!
I did find Boeing Gray Spray Paint through my perfect color. I used it on my 767 and the A300-600 and it looks right.
https://www.myperfectcolor.com/search/?q=Flint+FDS+Boeing+Light+Grey
The can of paint is $10.00 but they hit you with a $19.99 batch fee and shipping is high.($18.00 to my house in Florida) So if you order a bunch of it, the price gets to around what a good spray paint at the Hardware store or hobby shop cost.
Keep up the great work!

April 15, 2020 at 6:15 pm #158324Looks like my A310 from Hobbyterra is lost in the mail, so we have to find something else to build. There is a half baked Roden DC-3 on the shelf, a Revell 741 with PA decals and the Revell AN225. The remainder of my stash is out of my scale (1/144) but I very tempted to build the Glencoe Viscount. I did start a 1/72 Italiari DC-3 intended for Swissair, then I discovered the decals supplied with kit are the wrong colors and incomplete. Still searching for SWR or AA for this build.

April 18, 2020 at 6:28 am #158348Hi All,
Some progress was made today. The method that Eastern Express uses to make the trailing edges of the wings and stabilizers sharp is effective, but it creates seams that are challenging to eliminate without obliterating surrounding surface detail. This is made more difficult because the lower surface pieces are too thick on the outboard sections and need to be sanded down prior to assembly.
Even with the lower surface sanding, one wing and one stabilizer still had seams that will require a substantial amount of sanding and rescribing.
A test fit of the wings and stabs shows that the filling and sanding is not over yet. Sizeable gaps will need to be filled. Fortunately, the shape of the model looks pretty good to my eye, although I am not much of a rivet counter. All in all, I am happy with the kit so far.
The fit of the DRUZ144 engine pylons to the CF6-50s is outstanding! This will be a first for me, but I think I will attach the pylons to the aircraft prior to painting, while leaving the nacelles off. This will allow me to attend to any gaps between the wings and the pylons, while painting the bare metal engine nacelles separately. Masking the Alclad will be a much simpler experience doing it this way. By the way, I am really impressed with Sergey’s work on these products!
Hopefully more progress tomorrow…
Cheers,
Dan

April 19, 2020 at 11:45 pm #158358Good work Dan! I’d strongly recommend doing the nacelle to wing fit first, then painting everything separately, but you do you…
I got the fuselage decals on my 744 done the other day, now I need to do one last layer of Micro-Sol and then clear coat it before starting on the wing walks and doing final assembly.

April 20, 2020 at 5:07 am #158361I started working on the EE DC-10 kit. Lots of sanding! The EE DC-9-30 kit is coming along as well. That one is not too bad. I finished the construction of the Authentic Airliners Braniff 707-227 and the Authentic Airliners American Airlines A300-600 but I am waiting on decals for both to complete them. So lots of work in progress, not many results….yet!
Lots of good looking models so far on this thread. Great work everyone.

AKL NZApril 24, 2020 at 6:27 pm #158464Still awaiting the arrival of my EE A310 in the mail. In the meantime I have been working on some odd ball projects to pass the time. Built an EE PS-84 (DC-3) AFL, there was reason it remained unbuilt all these years and I am sorry I decided to change that status, bad kit, but these are trying times. Found a box that contained parts from three kit bashed kits and out of the debris was enough to complete a DC-6, I have UAL decals that must be from the 1980’s so I have 1/2 built and primed it last night. Lastly, I found a partially built Welsh 1049G that had I must have built back in the 80’s or 90’s, put it aside because I didn’t like the engines. Removed and replaced the engines with a set from the parts box and I have a set of TWA decals and it is just about ready for decals sometime today. I would post pics but I never get it right when I try to on this forum section.

April 26, 2020 at 5:16 am #158452Merlin, thanks for setting up the Zoom meeting. It was a great conversation that spanned from the lifestyle changes brought forth from COVID, to modeling techniques, current projects, and lots of conversation about aviation. I thoroughly enjoyed it and we should make it a monthly tradition! It would be great to get more folks in the mix, too.

April 26, 2020 at 5:45 am #158453Hi All,
Here is my progress on the -10. The wings have been installed. There were sizable gaps in the wing joins, both top and bottom, that were up to 1/32″, even with some tactical sanding of the WTB fairing and the wing root. This was filled with CA and sanded, trying my best to preserve the surface detail.
The engine cores were painted with Alclad Gloss Black Base and then given several light coats of Polished Aluminum. They were then sprayed with Future, masked and the aft portion of the jet pipes was masked and painted with Burnt Iron. The effect I felt was a bit too much of a contrast based on photos of the aircraft in service. In order to tone it down, I recoated them with Future and went directly with a light dusting of Alclad Airframe Aluminum. This was a bit of an experiment, but it worked nicely.
More progress soon!
Cheers,
Dan

Great progress and I love the Alclad idea! I’m painting the hot section of my Rolls 757 engine and may try that technique.
I spy something supersonic in the background…Concorde? TU-144? B-1b?

April 28, 2020 at 12:25 pm #158497Like they say on the radio, “long time listener, first time caller”. Figured I’d use this thread to introduce myself. At the start of quarantine, I began working on the EE DC-10. The build went satisfyingly well but I lost juice during the painting process [NMF fail] and is now on the “shelf of doom” with a couple of new friends. Other shelf of doom members include: a converted Zvezda Alitalia 772, Authentic Airliners MD-11 in 80’s/90’s Federal Express colors, Authentic Airliners A310, and some more. Each one has been a new learning experience.
That being said, I decided to purchase the EE A310 and here’s where I’m at today.

www.zbynek-honzik.czApril 29, 2020 at 3:10 am #158504Welcome Christian,
Your A310 looks stunning!
Scott,
Thanks for the kind words and yes, my DC-10 is sharing the bench with a 1/48 Monogram B-1B. I started with the engines and intakes because I think it will be the most difficult part of the build. I plan to build it with wings spread and flaps and slats deployed. Should take about a decade:-)
I am glad I figured out that technique with the Alclad/Future. It will make dealing with Alclad much easier, virtually eliminating the fingerprint issue. Just mask, spray Future, then spray the Alclad metal color directly onto the future. I will be experimenting on some larger pieces to see ow it does wit, say a whole fuselage. For now, the Laker paint scheme does not have much bare metal except for the wings, stabs, and engines so it is pretty straight forward.
Cheers,
Dan

April 29, 2020 at 6:54 am #158505Technically not finished just yet, as there’s a couple things I have to fix (and a clear coat to come), but close enough to share:
Roden kit, more or less from the box, and Ahmed’s decals.
