Hello Everyone!
I am about to begin an airliner modeling project (EE DC-10-30) and got the idea that many of us are either off work or spending much more time at home due to the COVID-19 issue. I was planning to post it here and then thought perhaps we should do a group build to get our minds off of some of the events of late.
It might be best not to set any parameters (scale, jets, props, etc.). This way everybody can choose the scale and aircraft that they prefer while a positive building environment is made here on The Cafe.
Would there be any takers?
Cheers,
Dan

April 1, 2020 at 6:11 am #158137Hi Dan,
I’m in!! Great idea.
I’m home for 6 weeks with the family. Safe and secure. Plus enough in my stash to build for a few years lol.
So I have on the go a long list…. on the civil end….
AA 777-200
AA 737-200
Zvezda 737-800max and a C40
Etc.To name a few. I figure I can’t guarantee what will get finished in any particular order as there is some military planes in the cue too…. maybe a boat lol 😝
I will make a good effort to post pictures.
All the best my friends.
Cheers
Andrew
CYYZApril 1, 2020 at 9:24 am #158138Heck yea…
I’m still working so haven’t yet touched a model in a few months. Busy with work and all the shelter in place stuff but need to work on some airliners. Airliners International is still on for July. The group build for AI is Airlines of Arizona. I may do an Arizona One. I also have a couple of Aloha 737’s to finish for a collection.Ken

April 1, 2020 at 9:36 am #158139I’m in, retired not going out at all. At age 70 I have been burning through my stash to the point that there is nothing notable remaining to build. That said, I have on order an EE A310, Pan Am decals and Bra-Z engines. All have been shipped but only the decals have arrived to date. The only kit left in the stash I would love to build is the Revell AN-225 but I would have no room to display it much less any room to build it.

So far this year I’ve completed two Otaki L-1011s (Eastern, PSA) and two DC-10s (American,Continental) both Revell. Currently under construction: EE L-1011-500 (TAP) and Revell DC-10 (Mexicana). My weak link is posting pics but I’ll just have to work on that.

I’m in; I’ve got a few models in my stock so let’s go! Don’t know exactly which one but it might be a Zvezda 787-9, or an A321 NEO…
All the best,

www.christianklepp.comApril 2, 2020 at 1:25 am #158146Hi All,
This is great and I’ll start! My build will be the 1/144 Eastern Express DC-10-30 kit in Laker Skytrain colors.
The kit generally looks pretty nice but does have some “short run” features which will require care. First there are no alignment tabs so some care will be required to get a good fit. Second, sprue attach points are typically right on the seam line between parts. When removing them from the sprues, a good set of snips will be helpful and some light sanding will be required to get a good join. All in all, this kit could be built straight from the box, but I am going to introduce a little aftermarket to it to get exactly what I want.
Although the kit decals are generally okay, they have a small clear line between the red and black stripes on the Laker scheme. I believe this is a very minor printing error, but I am going to go ahead and use a set from 26Decals since it will allow me to build “Florida Belle,” giving homage to my home state. Werner Lehmann’s window decals are outstanding, so I will be employing those as well. The kit engines are quite nice, but I like the Druz 144 engines a great deal because they are accurate and also are assembled in such a way as to make painting a breeze. Laker used the later model DC-10-30 exhausts while the Druz 144 kit represents the earlier type with the extended tailpipes. This will require some minor modifications.
I will put glue to plastic this evening!
Thanks for joining me on this fun adventure!
Cheers,
Dan

April 2, 2020 at 1:31 am #158147Great idea and start so far!
I’m still flying but doesn’t seem like much or for much longer
I would love the happy distraction and will probably start something easy for this group build and ideally, finish the nearly completed models I have waiting for gear doors, antennas, etc.

April 2, 2020 at 5:06 am #158150Hi Guys,
I should have posted this earlier…
I have had good success using http://www.picresize.com to reduce the image resolution to post on AC. You simply upload your image it to the site, set the resolution to 1024 and download it back onto your computer. Then you will want to save the photos to your My Files tab. Once done, you can access them through the My Files link at the bottom left corner of the forum posting window. I hope that helps a bit.
Cheers,
Dan

April 3, 2020 at 1:41 pm #158161Awesome to see your KLM beauty here, Merlin!
Good success with your Laker DC-10, Dan!I can post a couple of images of my Revell 747-8i in its current status.
The plan was to quickly realize D-ABYC in Lufthansa new colors. It was in D-Check in Beijing
during February and March 2020 to also receive the new colors. However, the corona crisis crossed these plans and Lufthansa decided to not paint the aircraft into its new scheme. So, the model has to wait as well … I will finish it except for all titles and logos. After that it will go to storage because there is no 747-8i in the new scheme yet. D-ABYA is still flying with the darker blue colors and smaller crane logo. I hope that D-ABYC will see its new colors soon after the crisis as it is in need of a paintjob. So here is how she currently looks like, shortly before standing on her own legs.
I am everytime again impressed how BIG she is!
To see the images larger, right click the mouse and select “view image”.
Today I also primered the wings and stabs of the AA Condor 737-200 and continue to work on the silver fuselage.
If there is interest, I could post a complete build thread of these models.
Happy modelling to all of you
and I look forward to seeing many images here in the next couple weeks!Cheers from Hamburg,
Christian

April 3, 2020 at 11:44 pm #158165Hi All,
Those 747s look fantastic!
Christian, what type of metal paint are you using? Those engines look super realistic!
So I started work on the EE DC-10. Like their MD-11 and L-1011 like, the aft portion of the fuselage is a separate part with no tabs to help the fitting process. I thought about installing some tabs made from scrap plastic but decided that they might cause more problems than they would solve. Per the kit instructions, each fuselage half was placed on a flat table protected with wax paper and carefully glued with CA, making sure the alignment was perfect (or as close as possible). Once the CA cured, I reinforced the seam on the inside as well.
Unfortunately, this is one of those kits where the interface between the nose gear well and the nose gear itself would normally require the strut to be installed prior to closing up the fuselage. I can virtually guarantee that it would get broken off at some point during assembly. I decided to use a cut portion of a needle to install in the mounting holes for the nose gear. This will allow me to install it later by cutting the mounting tabs on the nose gear and attaching it directly to the metal piece. This will likely be a bit stronger too.
I will be using cockpit window decals so I only installed the bulkhead and floor to add a bit to the rigidity of the kit. The modified nose gear well and a few pennies were added to make sure that the kit would not be a tail sitter, especially with the resin center engine parts that will be added later. I figured the trickiest part of putting the fuselage halves together would be getting the alignment of the seams inside the center engine duct just right, so I started there and worked forward, adding glue and pressing it together bit by bit.
The lower portion of the wing-to-body fairing is a separate piece that fits on after the two fuselage halves are joined. I found that there was a serious lack of rigidity here with the fuselage assembly, which was resulting in a mismatch between the fuselage and the WTB fairing, leaving a 1/32″ step on both sides. I used strip plastic, cut to the right length to spread the fuselage slightly so the fit would be good.
The short run-ness of this kit is apparent in the fit. For example, the cockpit window piece needed a lot of “encouragement” to get a proper fit. Still, it is going to take some filling and sanding.
So, the fuselage is assembled and now it will take some time to get rid of the seams and re-scribe the lost detail. I keep looking at that AA DC-10 kit on my shelf and questioning my sanity. Most of the difficult points on this model so far would be completely non-existent on the AA kit, but I love a challenge!
It is starting to look like a DC-10 now!
Cheers,

April 4, 2020 at 1:41 am #158167Hi Jodie!
Awesome! The Monogram DC-10 was one of the first kits I built when I was a kid. My folks knew I wanted it and they hid enough change in Easter eggs so that I could go down to Thrifty’s and get it. I loved that model. Such cool memories!

April 4, 2020 at 4:40 am #158170Dan, it’s interesting that you have a childhood memory of this kit same as I do. I was really interested in airliners as a very young child and had as many kits as I could afford on my weekly allowance. After the American 191 crash in 1979 I got fascinated by the story and wanted a DC-10 model, and it had to be in American Airlines markings, which necessitated the Monogram kit. I remember my dad and I built that kit at the kitchen table the morning of July 4, 1979. He took it outside and spray-painted it silver for me. Even at age 6 I knew the Monogram kit wasn’t anywhere as good as the Revell kit, but Monogram’s kit had the all-important American markings while the Revell kit available at that point had this “Skytrain” thing with some guy named Freddie Laker, and it all sounded like something off a television show. How little I knew!
As it happens, the kitchen table where that original, long-gone DC-10 model was built now sits in my house, and my plan is to build this DC-10 at that same table. I know everything that’s wrong with that kit, and I love it anyway.
There is a more true-to-scale airliner project presently underway, too, but I learned long ago the value of rationing my material. :wink
I’m sure looking forward to how your DC-10 comes along….

April 4, 2020 at 5:01 am #158171Hi Jodie,
I think it is a great build idea and what a great story. I built the Aurora PSA 737 some years back for the same reason. You know, that Monogram DC-10 is not that far off based on the drawing that I believe Aurora used…
Here is my Aurora build from 2001.
Cheers,

April 4, 2020 at 7:12 am #158174Dan, the first time I saw that drawing in Terry Waddington’s book, all the weird shapes in the Aurora/Monogram kit immediately made sense. I’ve even thought about somehow getting decals for that old AA livery and putting them on that kit.
Kitmakers did some interesting things to be the first on the market with a kit. It’s often told how the Aurora 737 looks so much like preliminary drawings from Boeing, and there are also pre-production renderings of the L-1011 that look uncannily like Revell’s TriStar. All the weird shapes make sense!
After Monogram acquired the Aurora tooling and reissued some of the airliner kits in the late ’70s I had just about all of them – the 737 in United’s Saul Bass colors, the 727 in TWA colors, and the 747 with Pan Am decals. Plus the DC-10, of course. It always broke my heart that Aurora sold out just when I discovered the 727 had been marketed in Eastern colors, and the local shop couldn’t get me one. (Which, of course, I can now sort of fix thanks to the Atlantis Models reissue.)
Nice job on the 737! I have two of them upstairs and had planned a serious rework of them before the BPK kit came along. But I’d have to work hard to match what you did with that one. Wow.

April 4, 2020 at 8:01 am #158176April 4, 2020 at 10:17 am #158177V1, rotate! (Go for it!). It looks like you have the aftermarket things to fix it and make it really nice. I built one a while ago, but took a slightly different approach…
My 7N7 was a kit-bash of the Minicraft 757, an Airfix 727, and resin engines from an L-1011. The vertical stab was scratch built. The fan diameter was slightly too large for a RB.211-535, but I was using a bit of artistic license.

Your 747-8 is very impressive. Doubtful I’ve seen any better. If you expand on your techniques I’m sure many would be interested. The landing gear detail is unreal.

April 7, 2020 at 2:52 am #158208April 7, 2020 at 4:20 am #1582097N7, Wow! The only other one I have ever seen belong to Russell Brown.
Do show us the final build. The vertical stab is eyeball 20-20 or did you have some reference plans. I usually do not build flight of fancy but that is one cool looking concept that I might have a go to.Clear resin front section for the 757 NinjaFlight? where does that comes from? The tail fix is very easy, do it, it helps so much with the overall look of the kit.
LH707, that little monster is an Eastern Express A220-100. Perhaps one of the worst kits I ever built. Well, nothing like and Entex 1/144 74whatever that was. It has been so close to fly into a wall but I am trying to just get it done. Funny, the lack of decals for that kit, and the ones in the kit….horrible!!!
The Heller 1/72 Concorde is perhaps the worst, but I really love that bird so I manage to finish it.On a different note, I did an almost one weekend kit, not my best but I really enjoy slapping together a Daco 1/100 737-300. I think that is the fastest kit I have ever built!
Yes going crazy working from home, but I am really having a blast building models and finding shtuff that I had no clue I had.
Happy Modelling!!!Walter

April 7, 2020 at 6:42 pm #158214Nice planes!
Walt, to answer your question it is a homemade copy of my AA kit which is reserved for a bare metal subject. I know there is often a question of resin ethics, but I was experimenting with resin for an AC-208 build and needed to practice on something larger and smoother. It’s clear just because clear resin is what I had – I don’t plan on doing anything cool with the cockpit windows but it may be worth a try. If you look close you will see lots of bubble holes so I’m definitely not good enough with resin to start ripping off any of our beloved resin kit makers.
For anyone who has done the “tail-ectomy” are you removing the whole rear assembly with the horizontal stabs, rotating it and remounting it? Or just the vertical stab? I can’t tell which is more crooked. Or if I care. Just trying to bang out the right shape. It will be flying gear up on a stand anyhow.
Also anyone have an Icelandair blue or yellow match or formula? I have something in mind but always enjoy a shortcut.
Oh and I did at least level the top of the vertical stab, the rotation is the only problem now.
Cheers everybody!

April 8, 2020 at 6:27 pm #158222In the interest of structural integrity I did not use the BraZ tail section. I merely cut and twisted the kit then glued it back up using kit shavings mixed with liquid glue.
The plan is one more fill and sand then paint, the wings have their first coat already.

April 8, 2020 at 10:03 pm #158226Hello All,
A little progress being made over here…
As I suspected, eliminating the top and bottom seams in the center engine duct is a bit of a bear. Using a conveniently sized handle and a Dremel sanding wheel, the inlet is slowly coming in line.
The DRUZ144 CF6-50 engines are terrific and their construction really aids the modeler in painting the inlets prior to assembly. They also come with decals to simulate the inside of the fan case realistically. This engine set replicates the early hot section exhaust versus the later ones that Laker had on its DC-10-30s. I am converting them by simply sanding off about 3/32″ off the back end. I think this will work out close enough to make me happy since I am not a turbo rivet counter.
More to follow…
Cheers,
Dan

April 9, 2020 at 1:29 am #158229Greetings Dan,
Your EE DC-10-30 is looking really good. I have started that kit as well. Typical Eastern Express Kit. Lots of sanding and more sanding. Still, it is all we have for a DC-10-30 with the later CF-6-50 Engines. Mine will be a United “Saul Bass” Livery when it grows up. I finished my Authentic Airliners US Air 767-200. I still need to get some pics. Working on an Authentic Airliners Braniff 707-227.
Keep up the great work and thanks for the pics of the work in progress!

Please, can someone of you advise, what colors the Piedmont (delivery) B737-200 horizontal stabilizer had? I noticed in Dan’s fantastic Boeing 737 book, that there are boeing gray on tips, natural metal and coroguard. But I do not know how exactly they are located. I think, and the photographs confirm that the color arrangement has been constantly changing, especially at the beginning of production. Please help! Thanks a lot.

Nice work! I really like the Embraer in the Air Canada paint scheme. I am thinking of building the Tamiya 1/100 EMB-175 in SkyWest (Alaska) colors in the near future.
Zbynek,
Thank you for your kind words! Although I could not find an early Piedmont 737-200 Basic (non-Advanced) photo that shows the stab colors well, I did find one that agrees with the LU instruction sheet in CPAir markings. On those early 737-200s, this tends to be the standard finish.
If you are building a 737-200 Advanced (and sometimes Basic aircraft that had been repainted) in the later Piedmont scheme, the horizontal stabs should be painted Boeing Grey with a natural metal leading edge.
I hope that helps and I am looking forward to seeing your 737s!
Cheers,
Dan

April 10, 2020 at 2:09 pm #158246Thank you very much for your help, Walter and Dan. I appreciate it very much. Now I could put it together.
I want to build the delivery livery version that already has the advanced thrust reverser, but everything else corresponds to the “Basic” early production version, including early engine pylons and the “suck-in doors” behind the engine intakes.Romu, nice work, especially Air Canada B787.

AKL NZApril 11, 2020 at 9:05 pm #158250Finished this one a couple weeks ago as the Eastern Express 1/144 scale MD-80 in the earlier American Airlines livery, ship #567. N567AM was the last MD-80 delivered brand new to American in 1992 from the factory in Long Beach, California, serving well for 24 years before being retired in 2016. She was stored in ROW before being returned to service in 2017 as a cargo carrier still active and operating south of the border.
This model was a first for me in a few areas; my first attempt at an Eastern Express model, use of acrylic paints (I usually use enamels), and first use of Xtreme metal (I usually use Alclad) for the finish. Quite a few challenges for sure, but the model came together well in spite of the issues that the EE kit presents. Painting and finishing challenges were new to me, as I am sure they are old to many, but didn’t prove impossible…just different from what I have done in the past. Good learning experiences and I would most definitely build this kit again.
To mix the AA gray I used Tamiya X-1 and X-2 until it “looked about right,” using photos of the actual airplane in sunlight from different angles. Tamiya gray surface primer, Tamiya TS-14 gloss black as a base coat for the metal finish. Xtreme metal airbrushed along with light polishing to achieve the natural metal finish. Flying Colors details; Draw Decals details, cheat lines, and livery markings; Authentic Airliners life like windows; Platz PE parts for the landing gear, antennae, and pitot tubes.

April 11, 2020 at 11:00 pm #158251That MD-80 is incredible. If you hadn’t told me, I would have had no way of knowing it was a “first” in so many areas. You also get bonus points for having a much neater work area than mine!
