Hello, doing the conversion on the AMT KC-135A and Im looking for some 1/72 JT3Ds for it. I can find the C versions with the organ pipes but not the Ds. Hoping to have a 707-123B when its all done. Got alot of cutting to do but wanted to start looking for the engines now. Thanks for any help.

July 13, 2022 at 3:09 pm #182719Chris, this is gonna be a fun one! I did a short-body one years ago, it was a mix of fun and suffering. My advice is to use the technique in the DC-8 article to stretch it: https://airlinercafe.com/modeling-articles/converting-mach2-dc-8-into-a-dc-8-73-freighter-182045/
I did a build thread several years back, available here: https://airlinercafe.com/forums/topic/kc-135-to-707-138-conversion-steps/
Seems like the pictures got lost in the site move.
Here’s an article on the topic written by Rob, Jodie, and myself: https://airlinercafe.com/modeling-articles/ultimate-707-conversion-guide-179143/
Happy to discuss your build in more detail, and looking forward to the pictures.

July 13, 2022 at 8:08 pm #182720Flightpath makes nice resin engines, but they’re designed for the AWACS so the front of the pylon at the turbocompressor is a bit different. I’m uncertain if there are any other big visible differences. Perhaps somebody else knows. Flightpath also makes nice photo etch window frames for the 1/72 707, if you are looking to avoid decal windows.
Cheers,
Mike M.

July 14, 2022 at 8:44 am #182749Are the pylons the same from the JT3c to the d? It looks like you have to use the kits pylons to hang the Flightpath engines, which if you were upgrading the kit engines would be no issue going from tf-33 to resin tf-33s.

July 14, 2022 at 1:07 pm #182751I have read those articles several times! They gave me the inspiration to go for this conversion. I will probably do the WBF move. A couple of questions. The plus measurements above for a 123B have me adding length both fore and aft. Does this mean i get to cut the remaining part of the fuselage after i remove the WBF? Also, which direction does the WBF move when i go to reinstall it in the lengthened fuselage? I am an A&P mechanic by trade but real airplanes dont work this way! I appreciate all the advice.

July 14, 2022 at 2:00 pm #182752Ok, after adding up the amounts in the chart, i realize that im simply adding the additional length in the center of the fuselage. It was early when i sent the previous post. It still looks like the WBF would move aft. Is that correct?

July 17, 2022 at 9:52 pm #182789If you’re trying to do a 123B, you’ll need to add length before and after the WBF, so you’ve got two options:
- Cut the WBF out and add a single plug in the remaining fuselage that adds 6 frames’ worth of length, then glue the WBF back on.
- Make two cuts: one ahead of the WBF, one after, and then add +4 frames ahead and +2 frames aft.
If I had to do it, I’d go with option 2, and then stagger the cuts left and right so that I can use the other half to hold the bits in place (Mathiemca method). The cargo deck will now be the wrong length, so I’d recommend either stretching it or cutting it into three bits and leaving gaps.
Regarding the engines, I’m pretty sure the pylons are different between the JT3C, JT3D, and AWACS TF33, so I’d try to source one of the kits that has the KC-135E engines to use. The Flightpath ones are definitely wrong for the passenger liner, they’d need pretty serious surgery to get right.

If you are building a 707-123B of American Airlines, you will need JT3D engines with turbo-compressor hoods on engine #2 & #3 only. Engines #1 & #4 will not require them. So, you just can’t transfer the JT3D engines from a Heller or Airfix 707-320B or E-3A/B/C or E-3D/F kit. However, you are in luck, as a chap in Chile makes some beautiful resin TF-33 (military JT3D) enignes for the AMT KC-135 kit with turbo-compressor hoods on #2 & #3. The big advantage, these engines are designed for the AMT KC-135 kit, so it should be a simpe fit. Look on ebay for “KC-135 Pratt & Whitney TF-33 engine resin conversion kit 1/72“, seller kanito2012cl. I have no affiliation with the vendor of the product.

I would advise all to be wary of ordering anything from this vendor. Over a year ago I purchased one of his products via eBay. There was no difficulty with the transaction, but when I received it, I discovered that the instructions were missing from the item, a well-made but complicated conversion kit requiring an extreme knowledge of the subject (which I do not have) in the absence of any detailed guidance on how to utilize it. I contacted him and he replied, telling me that the original instructions were on a hard drive that had failed, that he was redoing them, and that they would be sent to me within two weeks. I have yet to receive them, in spite of several reminders and enlisting the help of a mutual acquaintance. So before you order anything from him, I would advise you to ask if complete instructions are included.

August 16, 2022 at 5:27 pm #183006Actually they arrived last week, well packed and some basic instructions. Since im building an AA 123B, Ive been looking at alot of pics of the engines and the only difference is that the pylons with the T/C humps go to the number 2 and 3 positions. The engines are the same. I just have to work to remove the pylons from the rest of the cast material. Im still working on the stretch of the fuselage but i will try to post some pics when i get to them.
