      Interesting news for the changing times facing airlines in Alaska:

      PenAir in Bankruptcy Court for Chapter 11 Reorganization

      As many up here have noted, this seems to be a small-scale repeat of the MarkAir fiasco; PenAir broke out of their core Alaskan market and opened small hubs serving niche EAS routes in New England (primarily to Maine from KBOS), as well as KPDX and KDEN. The bankruptcy will see the shuttering of the Oregon and Colorado operations (with the exception of a single point-to-point KPDX-KCEC [Crescent City, CA] EAS route), though apparently the Northeast ops are doing well and are unaffected.

      Having met Danny Seybert (son of PenAir's founder Orin Seybert), he's not one to pull punches, and something tells me this will be a learning experience for the company. At a bare minimum it should bolster their core Alaskan ops, as their SAAB 340B fleet allocated to Outside routes will return to the state to complement both those already here as well as the SAAB 2000s that are far and away better rides than the endurance experience of spending three hours in a Swearingen Metro with no facilities (on a flight once operated by Reeve with the Electra and full service...).

      Sad to hear of PenAir's troubles and wishing them a healthy recovery; they have always impressed me as a true intra-Alaska airline, committed to serving the state's unique transportation needs (whereas the other major player serving smaller Alaska communities seemed, to me, more like a "carpetbagger" airline under the ownership of the early 2000s).

      Does PenAir, as alluded to above, currently operate Swearingen Metros on flight segments of 3 hours duration? If so, on which route(s)?

      No, not any more...They've standardized their "Mainline" fleet on SAAB aircraft, with a mix of 304B and 2000 models. That 3 hour tip was I believe their worst (IIRC it was a 2:59 block time), from PANC to PASD (Sand Point, in the Aleutians).
